4 PAGE FOUR ° His Talk With Barton Gives Fing Insight Into Human Side of ; Nature of Sfient Cal; _ Tribute to Wife Bruce Barton‘s recent interview with the President, which was sent throughout the country by the Aug- L 120 34. Lboubvtelifiandaiine uind 294 ciated Press, has been the outstandâ€" ing topic of conversation at the Naâ€" tional Capitol since publication. _ . | The editorial comment has been extraordinarily commendatory. The opinion is expressed again and again that we are all the better for this firstâ€"hand view of the likes and disâ€" likes, hopes and aspirations of the chief executive. d Size of the Man It has done more than anything else o reveal the size of the man who is ident, and his absolute disassociaâ€" ion in his acts and words from any thoughts of either personal glorificaâ€" tion or advantage. ~ What master of industry, for exâ€" ample, would be willing to publicly admit that when a small boy his greatest hope was that some day he might run a general store? The ayâ€" erage man who has reached a Po.ition of importance feels obligated in reâ€" viewing his career, to convey the imâ€" pression that even from the lisping stage he had a great ultimate goal in mind, the goal which he finally achievâ€" ed, but this is not the Coolidge way. Gracious Tribute The tribute which Mr. Coolidge paid to Mrs. Coolidge, and through her to the women of America, is also one which will appeal to each and every one of us who has had the opâ€" portunity even though at a distance, to see that most gracious lady and helpmate. _ One of the most striking tributes was printed in the Milwaukee, Wisâ€" consin, "Journal." It runs as follows: COnSIA, S OUIIIETY BW IOEMW SHT PM ICC "Today ‘The Journal‘ prints an inâ€" terview with the President of the United States. It contains not a word of government policy, not a syllable of party propaganda, not a letter of selfâ€"promotion. Yet that interview will live when Coolidge policies are forgotten. In it a man comes from behind a mask, Readers of that inâ€" terview will know Calvin Coolidge as they never could hope to know ‘Mr. President.‘ Reartfelt Expression "A man who has the companionâ€" ship of a lovely and gracious woman enjoys the supreme blessing that life can give. And no citizen of the United States knows the truth of that stateâ€" ment better than I." ~ In these words Calvin Coolidge pays tribute to woman‘s aid in man‘s labors. But he does more. He shows that, beneath a frigid exterior, there beats a heart more 1 his friends, suspected. Mr. Coolidge believes in the family as he believes in God, wholeheartedly. He believes that today opportunities are greater than ever before for men who are helped by family ties. And, in a moment of rare revelation, sitting with a friend, he has said so. â€" A lâ€"-fighing world, hushed at the glimpse of a soul,+ will be the better for it. HIGHWAYS DAMAGED = BY RECENT RAINS Owing to the fact that heavy rains have continued during the past week throughout all the north central states, river bottoms &re flooded, bridges have been washed out, and all highways are in doubtful condition, according to the latest bulletin on road conditions issued by the touring bureau of the Chicago Motor club. Conditions Bad in Places Many Northern States, State highway trucks have been placed along many state highways to aid motorists over bad stretches. Moâ€" torists, however, must make inquiry as to romd conditions in this flooded area. Practically no rain reported throughout the southern states and main trails are generally in good travâ€" elable condition. Roads into Florida ; have been opened up for through travel. Only light rains through thei eastern states. Main highways and trails remain in excellent condition.‘ Considerable rainfall reported in Kanâ€" sas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Idaho, | Arizona and California. Most trails‘ west of Kansas in travelable condiâ€"; tion: some sections, however, report| roads impassable for a few days at al time. Motorists are advised to make local inquiry along the western routes. All routes north and east out of Springfield have been reported closed excepting 110â€"10. The latter, route, however, is doubtful, on account of rising floodwater. | The Rand road is being paved from Des Plaines River road northwest to the Soo tracks, detour through Des| Plaines is marked. | Hich water south of Lincoln has closed the highway (Ill.â€"4). It will be a week or more before traffic can be resumed.
