The sports of this period, except hockey on the outdoor rink and polo in the riding hall, take place in the immense gymnasium. There are corps teams (providing places for 200 cadets) in basketball, boxing, wrestling, fencing, swimming, gymnastics, hockey and polo. Out of doors, during this period, are skating, snowshoeirig, skiing, and coasting. Those recreational activities are opâ€" en, of course, to all cadets. All caâ€" det athletics are under the direction The system of intramural athletics is so‘ arranged that every cadet, dur ing his four years, takes part in all forms of athletic sport. There are two periods, fall and spring. The fall spbrts include football, soccer, basketball, track, tennis, golf, and poâ€" lo, fencing and gymnasium. in adâ€" dition, for the new plebes, there is intramural work, daily, for two mon;lu immediately: after they enter on July 1. Although physical training of the cadets has always played a most imâ€" portant part in a cadet‘s life, athâ€" leties, as a whole, before 1890, did not reéceive much encouragement. In that year football contests with the naval academy began. Baseball was introduced in 1892, and in 1893 track and field athletics were started. Since then the scope of intercollegiate athâ€" letic competition has so far broadenâ€" ed that West Point teams meet other colleges in all forms of sport. ‘ ‘Every Student an Athlete The great encouragement for athâ€" letics at the academy came in 1920, whenâ€"compulsory intraâ€"mural athletâ€" ies were instituted. â€" This innovation !tu proved a wonderful success givâ€" ing West Point, more so than any other college, the complete realization of the ideal of "every student an athlete." t Athletics at the West Point Miliâ€" tary academy are of two kinds, interâ€" collegiate and intraâ€"mural. West Point is represented by corps teams, of course, for all intercollegiate comâ€" petition, ~ Intraâ€"mural athleties are compulsory for all cadets who are not members of corps squads. During the fisâ€" cal year 1925 more than $150,000,â€" 000 which had been collected from taxpayers of the country had to be refunded because it was not legally due. 22 + During the same year the Governâ€" ment â€" paid out â€" some $31,000,000 interest on taxes which had been colâ€" lected and later refuned. â€" The entire administrative expenses of collecting internal revenue taxes in 1925 were approximately $37,000,000. There are others also: gold miniature athletic â€" trophies, other memorial cups, riflie and pistol cups, and variâ€" ous intramural cups.
