_ NEAR EAST RELEF . IN ANNUAL REPORT Far Reaching Influence | "Once an emergency refugee feedâ€"! ing organization, the Near East Reâ€"| lief has now developed into the lanz~1“ est educational organization in the Levant, enrolling 18,000 students and | 400 teachers. Even more farâ€"reachâ€" ing than this direct field of instrucâ€" | tion is the foundation that is.being; laid by means of better textâ€"books and trained teachers for widespreadl educational work throughout the Near| East. Eight standard text books were | prepared and published last year,| dealing with such practical subjectsf as gardening, nursing, and h_vsnene.‘l The direction of. this educational task is in tharge of Prof. George M. Wilâ€"\ cox, who®came to this work after a wide experience in the Philippines, China, and. the United States. ‘ Industrial School | ‘To meet the need for better artisâ€"| ans as well as better citizens in the‘ Near Eastern countries, the nrgani»il zation has established three indusâ€" trial schools in three widely separated ( areasâ€"at Syra in Greecs, at Antilyas / in Syria, and at Leninakan in Rui-) sian Armenia. These form the basis for polytechnic institutions with farâ€" reaching possibilities throughout the Levant. In addition to these three more highly developed schools, indusâ€" trial training is given at all the other orphanage centers and specialized work at several of them, such as !hr} rugâ€"making school at Ghazir, and the school for the blind in Syria. Threc: important nurses‘ training schools| are maintainedâ€"in Greece, Constanâ€"‘ tinople and Armenia." The governor of Oklahoma is Qid to have a feminine Colonel House but we doubt whether she can be as siâ€" lent as the original one. Imported and Domestic °_ FALL PA P ER 8 A deficit of $80,000 was shown by the Near East Relief on total relief operations last year of $3,375,000, ing to the report of the treasâ€" , Cleveland E. Dodge, submitted the national board of trustees at ir annual meeting in New York this month. This deficit, according to Mr. Dodge, was due to unusual exâ€" penditures caused by the Armenian earthquake and the Druse revolt in Syria. Charles V. Vickrey, general secretary of the organization, anâ€" nounced that $250,000 more was needed for earthquake relief_ ! Trustees Prominent ‘ The national trustees of the Near: East Relief, 60 in number, include William H. Taft, Josephus Daniels, Charles E. Dawes, Myron T. Herrick, Henry Morgenthau, Elihu Root, John H. Herds of fowl\ often numbering five or six Wyoming wants more grasshopâ€" pers. _ According to the Nation‘s Business Magazine the state is ready not only to make a truce with its anâ€" cient enemy, but to welcome the pest to the Big Horn country. Once the "hoppers were in numbers to obscure lhesun.udwgivewilfomenwthe farmers. The damage to crops was so‘great that turkeys were brought in to combat the pests. For this warâ€" fare the gobblers were gluttons. They routed the ‘hoppers from the lowâ€" lands and chased them into the footâ€" hills. A severe decline of the grassâ€" hopper supply would, of course, eut down the crop of turkeys. Turkeys, it seems, prefer grasshoppers .
