~ RoosEvELt Bambi, young Prince of the forest, is only a little fawn when the story opens. Standing on his small, weak legs he is just <urveying the world and finding it wonderful and mysterâ€" jous and very exciting. His mother talks to him telling him of the happy wonderful things about which Bambi questions her endlessly, but now and then pausing. as if on the brink of a cliff, before some nameless frightenâ€" ing thing. Bambi, too, pause: and wonders. But life is so thrilling that he does not wonder long, only goes on enjoyâ€" ing the woods. and the meadow in the[ sunlight, making friends with the | hare and the squirrel and becoming terribly excited when one day they come upon some of his young cousins.| "Masterpiece," "work of art," whatâ€" ever the words the critics will apply to this "Bambi, a Life in the Woods" by Felix Salten, they will not cover the whole. There is something in the book which defies a label, a quality as elusive as the deer which is its hero, a quality which one seldom finds in any book. Perhaps it is the quality of complete sincerity and simplicity, perhaps it is wisdom, whatever it is it makes one, when one comes to reâ€" view it, approach it humbly. Lion Feuchtwangerâ€"whose recent novel "Power" it is rumored has just been purchased by Hoover for his five inch shelf of booksâ€"has got the idea. He is bringing out this Fall "Pep," poems of America by one who has never been there. Having read the books of other visiting authors from overseas he thought he might as well save the boat fare. A SCHOLARLY BOOK | "SHELLEY HIJS LIFE AND WORK® By Walter Edwin Peck Houghton Miffiin Co. But it is a work perhaps rather for scholars than for the general reader, not, we hasten to add, because it is scholarly, that would be unjust to the There are always a few books which you meant to review but which get away from you during the season. You store them up on your shelf, from which they view you reproachâ€" fully or balefully according to their natures, until you take them down and réview them. Such a one was Walter Edwin Peck‘s two volume Shelley in which he had indulged. Up for some months has been eyeing me sadly but with well merited reproach. On its appearance last winter this book was hailed by some of its reâ€" viewers as "the definitive life of Shel-‘ ley"â€"we might add "whatever that means." It is definitely, we suppose, in the sonse that it is an exceedingly scholarly and comprehensive piece of workeâ€"Mr. Peck has spared no pains. in consulting, verifying and comparâ€" ing all possible sources. Because of the elusive quality of Bambi it defies the ordinary words of praise or comparison. It is a thing in itself, quite perfect, perhaps best described by the words of its pubâ€" lisher an "idyll of animal life." Felix Salten, one of the group of Viennese writers, has a forest lodge beside the Danube and from here he has learned to know the wild life of which he writes. The cousins frisk and play together, only stopping once to ask each other, "Do you know what danger is ?" The others are silent, then his girl cousin laughs and bounding away says, "It‘s something to run away from." Then one day it becomes more tanâ€" gible than that, great claps of thunâ€" ooz wen mad maw o Bamole the forest and many of ‘s and wisdom into maturity, learning the lesson of the old stag, his father, which was: "You must live alone, if you wanted to preserve yourself, if you understood existence, if you wanted to attain wisdom, you had to live alone." friends fall. Up to that time we had found ourselves wondering why in such a coldly disâ€" interested manner he had gone to such an immense amount of trouble. Shelley is a character about whom we ourselves are likely to feel strongâ€" ly, we would rather enter into his mind as we did Keats in Amy Lowâ€" ell‘s wonderful biography of him than stand outside in this calmly critica‘ way. Gives Men Chance to Loaf and Hunt While Women Do Work ; Whites Invading work is scholarly to be of general apâ€" peal it must be something more, it must also paint a picture. ° In other words the author must be an artist as well as a scholar. It is here that Mr. Peck fails, he presents the material clearly and scientifically but he more or less leaves you to draw your own conclusions. In consequence, in spite of the vastly fewer number of pages and the far less volume of detail, we gained a clearer picture of Shelley, "Ariel" than from Mr. Peck‘s Life."
