Beginning in _the early days, when not much . at~ tention was given to the landscaping af: small and medium size grounds, this firm has léd in the work of landâ€" seape education, which_has resulted in the preésent generai“de’sireâ€"io'r deâ€" veloping home grounds,. There was â€"~a time â€" when _landscape effects were â€"sought. only by persofis of, great wealth, who had extensive estates and grounds. Now it has become the â€" ambition of almost every home ownet, no matter how small his grounds, to plan the planting in such a way as to . secure the best effects, thereby addâ€" Anodiet Afbuarreniet danbed 10 9gg. There is the effect of cheerfulness as one approaches the house, and at the same time the priâ€" vacy of inhabitants is suggested. It would be quite an education in landâ€" scape work to visit the many places where Swain Nelson work can be seen. Of late years there has grown up the question of using more of our native plants. The state of Tllinois possesses a large variety of herbaceous and shrubby plants with conspicuous flowers, which may be classed under the rather broad and indefinite term of "wild fAowers."â€" Such perennial flowers as the anemoene, butterfly weed, many varieties of asters, blue wild indigo, wild geranium, helenium, liatris, mentha, mertensia, the speedâ€" wells, and a host of others can be found under: cultivation at the fourâ€" hundrédâ€"acre nursery of Swain Nelâ€" son & company, at Glenview, Illinois. They also have many native trees and shrubs, such as honeylocust, hackâ€" berry, white ash, elm, willows, many varicties of prunus, paper white birch, June berry, button bush, red and grey dogwood, witchâ€"hazel, winâ€" terberry, sumac, prairie rose, and several vatieties of viburnums. , One of the most attractive things Around the city of Highland Park is the topographical feature, "the beauâ€" tiful ravines," filled with the above mentioned®. native plant material. People in this vicinity are blest with the most gorgeous autumn color, from the maples, oaks, witchâ€"hazel, etc.: Many of the subdividers have provided easements of ten to fifteen feet for paths and bridal paths down to Lake Michigan by way of these ravines. © It is to be regretted that â€"many people building in this wealth of verdure destroy the beautiful ‘underâ€" growth and native trees. It js with this aim in mind that Swain Nelson & Sons company are growing so many native plants, so as to be able to replenish those beautiful plants which have been destroyed.: â€" _ 6 Deerfield Public Library Following is a list of new books recently received at Deerfield Public Library: R ns «Cheerful Americans by: Loomis..
