TER n YO,II}'Z ments. aughts [eating room. ay 16, 1929 TION ing Thursday, May16, 1929 The very first people tried to talk to each other and to write to each other by using symbols or signs with their voices by making sounds to exâ€" press the symbol, or by drawing picâ€" tures in the sands or cutting them in stone or in wood. Did you ever stop to think that the very first peoâ€" ple did such things? So you see symâ€" bolism is as old as the first man and woman. We never stop to think our alphabet as being a collection of symâ€" bols for sounds. 2 . All‘ through the art of the anciert people, the Assyrians, Egyptiansâ€"and Greeks, we find that a leaf or flower or a curve in design was not just a pleasing arrangement of line, but a symbol for an ideal. As late as the Gothic area we find symbolism in everything. Just look at the arches and spires of a Gothic cathedral. People suddenly became modern and designs were copied and adapted. and the adaptations copied and readaptâ€" ed; and the symbolism was lost and forgotten. Camp Fire has recaptured for its _ members some of that forgetten beauâ€" ty of symbolism, that beauty of meanâ€" ing as well as beauty of line and color, * by bringing back the: simplest use of symbols. * § « The first place that the symbolism shows in Camp Fire is in the name| "Camp Fire Girls." At first one may think that the name signifies only a club for campers.~â€"But the idea has more sighificance. . When ‘the: name was chosen for the organization sevâ€" eral wanted the name to ‘be_"Hearth Fire ‘Girls." But although the idea of what the organization was to be with the home, it _wentâ€"further than the.hearth. The girls. were to be hearth girls, but they were to extend the warmth of the hearth fire outside the home.â€" They were to know the outdoors as well. So the camp fire which was the first fireâ€"and which inâ€" cluded the coming together of all people and of a family and nation to discuss ideals and plans, to celebrate successes and victories, to warm and cheer, ~strangers, was ‘chosen as the symbol of all the fire of human kind, and the organization was. called . the Camp Fire Girls. es ho J In the names of the three ranks again the symbolism shows. The fire would not be a success without the wood and the gatherer of the, wood has an ijmportant and constructive part in the plan, although it does not take the same skill or practice or exâ€" perience to gather wood that is needed to make a fire. Hence the nanie Wood ‘Gather for the first rank. . ~ The Firemaker, the second: ‘Tank, then has moreâ€" experience in Camp Fire, more. responsibility, because if the fire is not made properly, it will not burn. If it does not burn, then there will be no burning brands from it to be used as torches to carry on the light. So the significance of the name of the third rank, Torch Bearer. A symboi then, tells with great simâ€" plicity a story, a thought,; and inspirâ€" ation, or an ideal. When it is the symbol ‘of an individual and for an individual, it is of course marked by the personality â€"e#fâ€" the â€"makerâ€"and stands for anâ€" expression clearer to that person than any number of desâ€" criptive words. . | Camp Fire Flame Paint and Brushes Kept Busy by Camp Fire Maidens _â€" The Camp Fire Girls met Friday, May 10, at four o‘clock at their new room, which they are very proud of. She picked out her ‘Camp Fire name and symbol. â€"Also Peggy Kerr a visitor from Indiania enjoyed the noise. o ~+ P es Many of us had our names and symâ€" bois picked out already so we drew and traced them on each article. The finishing touches will be put on at our next meeting. * It wasâ€"decided by the girls to make a border around the table top of all the hikes the group takes.
