As Schurz | is the biggest high school in the world ‘nnd a number of fellows go out for the teams, they have had. many Ichampionships. Deerfield has never played Schurz before, so the pitchers | have no pointers on their hitters. Howâ€" | ever, the hurlers are getting a lot of ‘ practice in the gym so at least their | armsâ€"won‘t be stale. Net Used for Batting Practice; First Game with Fenger Saturday Although the athletic field was buried under a two foot blanket of snow last week, the Deerfieldâ€"Shields baseball squad practiced just the same. Wait a minute, not on the athâ€" letic field, no not for quite a while yet, but in the gym with the use of the net. The pitchers threw to the batters in the cage while those who were not batting were playing catch. As the weather was rather bleak and. the days were dark, the ball was rather hard to see, so the pitchers were inâ€" structed to take it easy. "Bud" Moon and Bob Skidmore were the only ones hit during the proceedings. Those who showed up good with the flail are "Monk" Martin, "Shorty" Struss, Bob Skidmore, Matt Maiman, Burt" Berube, Tommy Rogan, and "Bud" Moon. Among the pitchers who are showâ€" ing up well are Allans, Sommerville, Witten, Duncan, and Rudolph. Conâ€" trol is the asset the boys are workâ€" ing for while indoors. As yet no curves have been thrown. When the game‘ with Fenger takes place, the infield will probably beâ€" first base, Segert; second base, open; shortstoj Rogan; third base, Berube, "Richie" O‘Connor will be behind the plate, unless he breaks a leg or someâ€" thing before April 5. However, since Mr. Thurston‘s talk in assembly, four new catchers have come out, McNeil, Dixon, McKay, and Greenwald. The outfield is still undecided. That is, with only one outdoor practice beâ€" hind them, Coach Thurston hasn‘t been able to get a line on their fieldâ€" ing. He has Martin, Skidmore, Moon, Lenzini, and Struss to choose his openâ€" ing lineup from. Martin will no doubt start, on account of his hitting. The pitchers have not been named yet, as probably more than one will work in the game. The first game is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, with Fenger high. Although there is still a good deal of snow left on the ground, there is no optimism in the statement that it will all be gone by that date if not before. Deerfield played Fenger last in 1928. Deerfield won the game 5â€"4 The latest in watches is one which never needs winding. Once every 800 days it is connected to a battery and is good for another two years. It is an English invention.
