COUNTY POPULATION ASSURES NEW OFFICE Thursday, May 29, 1930 Increase in Census_Returns to Make Possible Election County Auditor The general . population increase through Lake county that indicates a resulting population in excess of 100,000, today assured Lake county a new office in theâ€"form of a county auditor, it was learned from County Clerk Lew A. Hendee. Such an official could not be elected until November, 1932, under the law which ‘provides for county auditors in counties of not less than 75,000 inhabitants. The powers of such an official would be almost that of a purchasing agent. On any county purchases or ecntracts the auditor, under the law, would audit the claims and approve them before the county board of suâ€" pervisors could give the final apâ€" proval and allow the county clerk to pay the claim. + Salary Fixed by Board The salary of such an official would have to be set by the board of suâ€" pervisors and an office in the county building provided. â€" The term of office would extend over a period of four years. For years the county board has contracted with an outside auditor to come in at certain intervals of the year and audit books and show emolâ€" uwments and expenditures. Woman Defies Deputies For House; Is Finally Arrested; Hearing Set Incidently any increase in populaâ€" tion in the county would not effect salaries of other county officials, acâ€" cording to Mr. Hendee, who stated ;ialae officials now received the miximum under the law. An enraged woman, wanted on a contempt of court citation, last week fought deupty sheriffs by barricading herself in her home at Five Points. Afterâ€" several fihts with officials in which she drew guns and a butcher knife, according to Chief of Police Frank Tiffany of North Chicago, she reached a climax when she barred the doors and defied Deputy Sheriff Chas. Kreuger to arrest her. Reserves were dispatched by Sherâ€" if Lawrence Doolittle and Krueger and two deputies later arrested the woman. She was released after date for hearing was set and her son was sent to live with a relative in Milâ€" waukee, according to a Waukegan paper. The woman, Mrs. Cora Koelner, the mother of a nineâ€"yearâ€"old sonm, Richâ€" ard, first had difficulties with the school nurse, Miss Kipp, when she failed to send the child to school. Failure to appear before County Judge P. L. Persons brought the conâ€" tempt citation. > Deputy Is Defied Kreuger was sent to bring the woman and lad into court but had to call for additional help. _ â€" _ Two days ago Mrs. Mary Polmeteer Funk, probation officer of the county court, was ushered from the premâ€" ises by Mrs. Koelner, she admitted, at the end of a butcher knife. Previously to that Miss Kipp had gone to the place to talk to the boy. Knife in hakd he threatened to slash the tires on her car or drive spikes into them. Tiffany and Patrolman Fred Ebâ€" ler, who first visited the place, faced a gun, they said, but they took the youth to North Chicago and the mother as well when she insisted that she be allowed to go.
