Thursday, June 5, 1930 Memorial Day, 1930; was another red letter day for North Shore ceme- tery. The weather favored the man- agement and the visitors. From 7:00 a. m. until 8:30 p. m. automobiles passed both ways through the {rates " the main entrance. License plates from several states were noticed, in. i-luding California, Masaehumstts, and Michigan. The men at the gate re- nuested all motorists to drive slowly, fa) out if respect for the "City of the Dead," th) because the motorists would fail to see many of the attrlc- tire and instructive features of this in]: landscape garden if they drove fuster than 12 miles an hour, (e) be. cause rapid driving tends to destroy the beautiful white driveways of the cemetery. The men making these re- quests kept strict account of the num- ber of cars and found that the total was szm during the day. As they esti.. mated that the cars averaged more than four occupants, it was concluded that. between 3300 and 3500 persons were Memorial Day visitors. Om- of the features which claimed the admiration of everybody was the special carc- plantings'on the graves. Hundreds of thousands of colored foliage plants specially adapted to this kind of planting had been grown in the greenhouses of the company during the winter months. Comment nn the difference between the apnea!- arco of these beautiful graves and those riot planted, or planted by ama- ttcis, was frequently heard. North Shore Cemetery Visited by Thousands Memorial Day, Report The rod-loaf maples, the purple-leaf n'ums. the golden ash trees, the [tuition "ti,',' bushes, the gray of the Russian 0 ives, the white of the cut- leaf weeping white bitches, the crab- apple blnssoms. great masses of honeysueltle blossoms, large groups of geraniums and tulips, the velvety lasz‘, the white driveways, all drew on! usiastic praise from the throng of people. While many contented thritvwlves with riding about the grounds. a-large number parked their ours and enjoyed walking on the green lawns and discussing the many vuriotivs of trees and shrubs at close range. _ The management reports that dur- ing Saturday and Sunday following Memorial Day, 120 more autos en- tered the grounds, thus Making I total for the three days of 950 cars and nearly 4,000 persons in three days. A well known North Shore woman who is active in garden club work said, "This is the flrst cemetery I over visited in which it is a pleasure to spend an hour or two." She further said, "Indeed, one may proiiUbly spend several hours here, " there are more varieties of trees and shrubs, all in thrifty condition, than I ever have seen in any other ceme- trry."
