Three thousand people were thrown into wild panic, and two children, a woman and a man were burned Friâ€" day night when a defective bomb set fire to the stock of fireworks for the Fourth of July celebration in Foss Park, North Chicago, causing a bomâ€" bardment lasting fifteen minutes and creating â€"terror among the throng that jammed the park to see the fireâ€" works display. A bomb instead of shooting upâ€" ward, flew sideways striking a box of other fireworks 150 feet away. These exploded with a terrific roar and burst of flame. The force of the explosion knocked down several women and children nearest to the place, and the cries and screams of the crowd was added to the crashes, flares and roars of the fireworks as other stores were ignited. The crowd was thrown into panic and dashed wildly for safety, numerâ€" ous persons falling in the stampede. The open space of the park preâ€" venting the people from crowding and the glare:from the explosions lighting the place brilliantly, saved many from being trampled in the rush.
