WOMEN VOTERS PLAN FOR ELECTION NOV. 4 Thursday, October 2, 1930 the referendum the General Assembly | wisely provided that if women are1 to serve on juries the woman who\ has the actual care of young children, the sick and the aged, shall be exâ€" empt. In 21 States In 21 states today including Wisâ€" consin, Indiana, Iowa, and in all of the states surrounding Illinois, exâ€" cept Missouri, women are serving on juries. In many of these, jury servâ€" ice was considered a natural conâ€" sequence of suffrage and the inâ€" elusion of women was made effective right after the Nineteenth Amendâ€" ment was passed. Since women vote, help elect our officials, help make and ; enforce our laws through the holding | of legislative and administrative ofâ€"| fices, it is reasonable that they should serve on juries, which is the citizens job in administering justice. We have| women : lawyers today, and women court attendants and women judges.l Is it not absurd that women should be considered unfit to act as jurors? This exclusion is a lingering discrimâ€" ination which is an anachronism in the twenthieth century. Unfairness Apparent The cases of women plaintiffs and defendents today must be settled by juries of all men. If men were asked to face juries of all women, the unâ€" fairness would be at once apparent. There are many cases of young girls and women brought to trial, where the presence of other women is imâ€" perative. The United States Suâ€" preme Court has said that whenever a whole group of citizens as a class is excluded from jury service, it seriâ€" ously lessens the value of jury trial to the members of that class. Most of them agree that they would not willingly return to the all men jury. As Chief Justice Marshall of the Ohio Supreme Court says, "The judges who preside over jury trials uniformly and without exception tesâ€" tify to the careful attention, consciâ€" entiousness, courage and good judgâ€" ment of women jurors." Now Think Reds Stole & ‘Machine Gun at Fort | Two more districts in the county are considering asking the county board of supervisors to set up towns for them, and if North Chicago carâ€" vies out its intentions, the board will have a busy December session setting 1up new commonwealths. Red agitators are now believed to. be responsible for the theft, of a heavy type machine gun and 18,000 rounds of ammunition for the gun, at Fort Sheridan recently, as reported elsewhere in this issue. â€" Investigaâ€" tion revealed that the machine gun was of a type too heavy to make it practical for use among gangsters. When the robbery was first disâ€" covered it was believed that gangâ€" sters had planned and executed anâ€" other bold coupe by raiding a governâ€" ment fort and stealing a machine gun and the large quantity of ammuniâ€" tion. Two More Districts Want to Be Townships Tentative plans in old Benton Township, known as the Town of Benâ€" ton in its political makeâ€"up, indicate that before the shouting and fighting dies there will be three towns, Zion, Winthrop Harbor and Beach.
