A book carefully chosen and thoughtâ€" fully bestowed is a compliment both to the giver and the recipient, and has a length of life dependent only upon ‘the judgment of the giver. Gift of Garden Books One of the happiest bits of news which this column has had to anâ€" nounce for some time, is that of a gift of approximately $50, given by the Community Garden class of the Highland Park Woman‘s club, for the purchase of garden :books. It is a rare library which can claim to have an exhaustive collection of books on ~any one subject, but in view of the great use of garden books in Highland Park, the library has long wished for greater resources to supply this demand. We can with some occasional aid of this kind build up one of the best collections on the north shore. Dr. Alfred Nobel Today will witness the warding of the coveted Nobel Prize for Literaâ€" ture for 1930, to Sinclair Lewis, the first American to receive that honor, The ceremony will take place in Stockholm, on the anniversary of the death of the donor, Dr. Alfred Nobel. Mr. Lewis is the author of Main Street, Babbitt, and Arrowâ€"Smith, and others of less controversial fame. Upsetting Records ‘ It has been a smashing summer. In spite of bursting thermometers, in spite of heads wagging dolefully over the business prospects of 1931, the library has experienced a season of amazing activity. With only about a dozen chairs and ‘not a place to hang your hat, the patrons of the Highland Park public library have for three months now had the admiration of the liâ€" brary staff because of their ready willingness to accept for the time beâ€" ing many inconveniences. The high point of 1930 was reached on Saturday when 574 books were borrowed on that day for home use. About 40 children listened to the stories told by Miss Agruss at 10:30 in the storyâ€"hour room, and later marched away with their favorite book under their arm. Every day new patrons ask for library cards. 141 new borrowers were registered in November, and 85| reregistered whose cards had expired. | Fanny Farmer Fanny Farmer‘s Boston Cooking school cook book has recently been issued in a new edition.
