Sears, No. 20,299, involving the back tax case decided at the last term of court in favor of Nirs. Sears. The People filed the peâ€" tition for hearing. Another‘ opinion will be handed down later. On Oct. 25, of this year, the Suâ€" preme Court reversed the decision of former Cireuit Judge Claire C. Edwards, in which a tax of close to $280,000 was assessed against Mrs. Sears, widow of the late Richard Sears, founder of the Searsâ€"Roebuck company t _ For many years Mrs. Sears lived at Gages corners, near Grayslake, and owned considerable property there. In it the veterans had charged that a large number of the supervisors had never entered the institution, that there was no budget but a "jackpot" instead, and that one county physiâ€" cian could carry out the work. "There is a law that governs this board in connection with the county hospital and if we have erred in folâ€" lowing the law it is no fault of ours," Supervisor William J. Obee of Highâ€" land Park, declared. Obee, who was made chairman of a special committee to investigate the stated to board members that there grievances â€" against . the hospital, had been but one organization, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, to come to that committee for any informaâ€" tion. in\;dfibly on the ho}pit@_l. The policy of operation at the hospital was investigated by most of the civic clubs as well as the veterans. State Road Building Plan Calls for Huge Expenditure in 1931 A road building program calling for the expenditure of $45,000,000 in 1931, is announced by H. H. Cleaveâ€" land, director of the state department of public works and buildings. The expenditures contemplated for 1931, as outlined by the highway deâ€" portment, are based upon estimates of funds that will be available from federal aid, from state motor license, and from twoâ€"thirds of the state‘s threeâ€"cent gasoline tax. It is figured that this amount will provide for apâ€" proximately 1,500 miles of standard 18â€"foot pavement. _ Under the tentative financial setup presented to Gov. L. L.
