There is a punch in every round that will send you checring, and a Dempseyâ€"like spirit in the new fayâ€" orite that will send a thrill down your spine. You will land a terrific blow of disappointment to yourself if you â€"missâ€"this fascinating struggle between two of the world‘s greatest Fight fans who have followed with interest the rocketâ€"like rise of Max Schmelling to the crown of the pugiâ€" list, will be given an opportunity to see the new king in the recent contest of 15 rounds. i Edward Everett Horton literally walks away with the role of Bensinâ€" ger, the aseptic reporter of Chicago‘s highbrow paper, who doesn‘t like to have people talk into the mouthpiece of ~his â€"telephone, who> garglesâ€"and whose vanity causes him literally to sit on top of the biggest story of the dayâ€"and sell it out for a fictitious job of writing poetry. t & World‘s Heavy weight ~~Championship Picturés T Grim and Humorous Revelation of News Reporting The irony, humor, and drama beâ€" hind the print of the day‘s paper, the method by which news is collected, and the attitude of those who collect it, and sift it, is pictured in "The Front Page," the tremendous Howard Hughes production. c . Howard Hughes, who gave the pubâ€" licâ€""Hell‘s Angels," . ‘"The Racket," and other pi¢tures, has made no conâ€" cessions to things that are "typically movie." â€""The Front Page" is unâ€" adulterated. It hasn‘t been softâ€"soapâ€" ed. And as such, newspaper men and women are the first to acclaim its veracity. ; . Humor and Thrillsâ€"â€"As In Lifeâ€"Alternate in Newspaper Drama All the cynicism, romance, callousâ€" ness, drama and melodrama of newsâ€" papering, are packed into this picture epitomizing the metropolitan press. Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, authors of the original stage play, are merciless, but their picture is tangled with doses of humor that keep the audience in such an uproar of laughtâ€" er that the lines can hardly be heard. Pat O‘Brien, a newcomer to the screen, will long be remembered in the role of Hildy Johnson, the happyâ€" goâ€"lucky star reporter of a Chicago paper who tries to break away from his ruthlessâ€"managing editor, Walter Burns, and ‘become a respectable writer of advertising copy. He yearns for marriage, a little home in the subâ€" urbs, an orderly life, and an existence where he doesn‘t have to steal stomâ€" achs from the coroner‘s office to have them tested for poison. . â€" Adolphe Menjou gives his public a decidedly new impression in the role of Walter Burns. He is cold, but hard; suave, but ruthless. There is# â€"noâ€"finesse in this Menjou. He proves himself a great actorâ€"where in the past he has been only a great type. f - s § 17 sday, July 16, 193 Cinema Talk John Barrymore and ‘Marian Marsh in Weird Romance of Old Paris Storyâ€"Whichâ€"Won ~â€"Fame <as Stage Play and Best Selling Novel Seen _ in Brilliant Talking Version The new Barrymore characterizaâ€" tion is an event in the theatrical world. ; Svengali is one of those rare creaâ€" tions which become symbols. Du Maurier‘s penâ€"picture and penâ€"drawâ€" ings of the weird musicmaster whose power over the pretty artists‘ model, Trilby, was so irresistible and so deadlyâ€"were ~so dynamic that the world still knows Svengali as defiâ€" nitely as though he walked the boards ably directer ago. All the parts are wellâ€"cast, Taffy, the Laird and Little Billee being done respectively by Lumsden Hare, Donâ€" ald Crisp and ~Bramwell ‘ Fletcher. Lifis. Azlberni is believably pathetic as Gecko, fiddleâ€"playing slave of Svengali. Honor is done by Carmel Myers, Mme. Vinard by Andrienne D‘Ambricourt and the concert m ager by Paul Porcasi. â€" Archi Mr. Barrymore‘s portrayal of the part brings Svengali into grim and shudderingâ€"life. â€" The â€"wild eyes, â€" the wilder beard, the bony and sinister hands ~all help to make ~the power over the pathetic girl of the Latin quarter believable. But it is much more than physical attributes which make the part so dominatingâ€"it is the Barrymore genius, which made his Peter Ibbetson, his Richard and his Hamlet so moving and unforgetâ€" able. roofs, under eaves, across water, and through storm clouds the faintly emâ€" bodied idea travels, finds its victim, and then wings back on a gust of wind to Svengali, who knows that he is still the conqueror of Trilby‘s will. Trilby is gloriously portrayed by exquisite Marian Marsh, recognized as the big screen discovery of the year. Toâ€"flowerâ€"like beauty _ of â€" face â€"and form, Miss Marsh hdds rare sympaâ€" thy and understanding. Her moving portrayal of the part makes it seem incredible that she is but eighteen and making her screen debut in the character. She is altogether captiâ€" vating in the huge epauletted â€"miliâ€" tary coat, the bangs and the bob, which "the classic drawings of Du. Maurier depicts. 2 The impressionistic sets add greatâ€" ly to the uncanny quality of the story. Winding stairways, cobwebbed nooks, crooked alleys, shadowy dives and outlandish byways, which Svengali traverses in his attempt toâ€" escape with his victim from her persistent lover, â€"Little â€"Billeeâ€"areâ€"made â€"with marvelous ingenuity. The photograâ€" phy ‘cannot go unmentioned, one of the most delicate and fantastic seâ€" quences showing the flight of a thought from Svengali‘s evil mind to the troubled heart of Trilby.
