o PAGE SIX Sometime before the end of this month there is to be an N.R.A. hearâ€" ing on the Canners‘ Codeâ€"and the Wholesale Grocers‘ Code at which the question of labeling according to established government grades will be discussed. In somewhat indefinite form the Canners Code provides for the setting up of quality standards. Bnaident%loomelz signed the code with a provision that a committee of the industry should report back a method â€" of . establishing . quality yrades. The committee has been. working on the question ‘and have announced â€" an opposition to outâ€" right grading, and have suggested instead that the industry adopt deâ€" scriptive labeling. To, this various onsumer agencies are opposed on the ground that this would tend to mislead‘ rather than enlighten the consumer. The igsue, therefore is "Would it be easier tor the consumer ‘to judge quality if cans w&e_hl_)el- ed A, B or C neeoï¬iu to whether they contained first, second qrhgnird grades?" Or, would it, be eï¬ifl;& toryâ€"if the quality were Merély deâ€" scribed in general terms? > . The administrator of the Canning Code has as one of his exhibits more than a hundred descriptive labels for corn bound together in book form.. It is evident that the consumâ€" er would not be much better off than before when confronted by so many different descriptions of one product. Mr. Dresher is the sonâ€"inâ€"law of the late Dr. M. H.
