~~~D.A.R. Better Films Committee Review Chats with the Master Gardener 8. ANNUAL FLOWER GIVE ADDED BEAUTY THURSDAY, MAY 27, 1987 Let me remind you of a few fundâ€" amentals that folks often overlook in laying out their flower borders. ‘The first of these fundamentals is that flowers should be massed. ‘They loked a lot more striking when they‘re planted in beds and clumps, a number of the same variety toâ€" gether, rather than in long thin lines or scattered here and SNGOTG, ‘The second is that flowers always appear to better advantage if they have a background, such as a green hedge, to make their lovely colors stand out. Whoodbine or some other hardy climber on a wooden fence will give you the same effect. _ In laying out flower borders it‘s important to remember to get them in the right scale for your garden. Remember that if they‘re less than four feet wide they don‘t let you get good mass effects with your flowers, and if they‘re more than ten or twelve feet wide they‘re pretty hard to cultivate. As far as shape is concerned, I think curving ‘ Prepare Seed Bed Make sure that your soil is neithâ€" er very sandy nor too heavy with clay, and pulverize it very thorâ€" oughly before planting. Flower seedlings are so tiny that they just can‘t get along in a clody soil. And they can‘t get along without food, €ither. They need eleven different food elements from the soil, and a lack of even one of these will cause trouble. So when you‘re preparing the seed bed, mix in some. complete plant foodâ€"a food that supplies all eleven of the food elements growing things need from the soil}in scienâ€" tifically balanced proportions. . Four pounds of food per 100 square feetâ€" that‘s about a pintâ€"of it to every five by five plotâ€"is a fine square meal for your flowers. _ aeset As for how to plant different varâ€" 1 ieties of flowers, it‘s a god idea to buy wellâ€"known, relhblerm of seeds, and follow the directi on the back of the package carefully. Most Annuals Sunâ€"Lovers Quite a few folks have had bad luck with their‘ annuals because they forgot one factâ€"that most of these flowers need a lot of sun. If you want to grow flowers in partial shade, though, here are some good varieties for the purpose‘ snapâ€" dragons, cornâ€"flowers, forgetâ€"meâ€" nots, and pansies.. Certain other varieties can stand long dry spells better than others, too. My experâ€" ience has been that calendula, peâ€" tunias, verbena, portulaca, centauâ€" rea, scabiosa, larkspur, and gaillarâ€" dia are the best of these. 50: Here‘s an interesting fact about flowers. For some reason, it tires flowers to form mature seeds, and once you let the blossoms wither on the plant and go to seed, the flowers are likely to stop blooming. So it pays to cut them regularly. Plant them carefully, weed them regularly, water them thoroughly, and cut them when they blossom. Following these four rules, plus one moreâ€"feed them a square mealâ€" will give you a lovely flower garden this year and every year.
