Gurney, 39, active area administrator for this district for the .Works Progress administration until six weeks ago, died of a threeâ€" day illness of lobar pneumonia late Monday at the Elgin State hospital where he had been a patient for 12 days. Gurney became WPA adminâ€" istrator in July 1935. His resignaâ€" tion, submitted last month, was to have become effective tomorrow. Mr. Gurney was originally assistâ€" ant superintendent and cost analyst for the Camp Logan project, under the direction of the Civic Works adâ€" ministration. At the expiration of the CWA, the Illinois Emergency Relief commission named ‘Mr. Gurâ€" ney tool and material supervisor. Later he became relief administraâ€" tor in charge of relief projects throughout Lake county and finally business manager for the IERC in the county. _ + As administrator for District No. 1, WPA, which includes Lake ¢bunty, Mr. Gurney had jurisdiction: over more than $3,000,000 in fedâ€" eral and sponsor funds spent on various public improvement proâ€" jects.
