American Red Cross Appeals For Aid In Tornado District An appeal for $30,000 for tornado relief has been launched by James B. Forgan, chairman of the Chiâ€" eago chapter, American Red Cross. ‘This amount has been designated as Chicago‘s share of the fund beâ€" ing raised in the midwest for reâ€" lief of the victims of the tornadoes that have created widespread havâ€" oc through 27 counties of lllincis, Missouri, Kansas, Okalchoma and Arkansas. "The death toll has mounted to 40," Mr. Forgan stated, "with 439 injured, 484 homes destroyed and 600 seriously damaged. The Red Cross has already put 57 trained disaster relief workers into the devâ€" astated areas. * "South Pekin was hardest struck with only three buildings left standâ€" ing. These are being used by the Red Cross as relief headquarters. Over 225 homes were destroyed with an additional 25 ‘badly damaged. ‘The city has nine dead and 80 inâ€" jured. Lauer and Mark Panther, registered a disâ€" tinct upset in the Oak Park relays last Saturday by placing third with 27 points in a field of over 40 parâ€" ticipating schools. New Trier finâ€" ished in first place with 43% points, beating out Oak Park with a narâ€" row % point margin. s Eight boys, running in relay teams of four each, copped firsts in the two mile and medley relay events and a third in the four lap race. Aldie Harris took a fifth place for one point in the 60 yd. low hurdles, Of the seven trophies awarded in the meet, three now rest in the display case in Shields hall. Durment, John Heath, Rompel, and Harirs ran‘the 4 lap event in 1:26.1, just 1/10 seconds out of second place and one of the best times any team has ever registered for Highland Park. \ Spring Festival Is Legion‘s Gala Event Of Season, Apr. 20 The Dumaresq Spencer Post of ‘ Highland Park announces a Spring Festival to be held at the Sky Rockâ€" et Wednesday evening, April 20. It will be one of the bright social events of the season. Legionnaires and their families and friends from Highland Park and surrounding communities will gather at the Sky Rocket for this gay occasion. The Dumaresq Spencer Post is planning elaborate entertainment for this evening which will appeal to everybody. Commander William C. Mrs. Norman Meiners and Mrs. Clarence Balke, coâ€"chairman of the department of government and its operation, have interviewed Mayor Dooley, Mr. Musser, city clerk, and some of the commissioners in order to give a living picture of our city and its needs as they are handled by our elected officials. Mrs. Monroe Ottenheimer sent out a large committee of women who have interviewed school board members, school principals, teachers and school trustees. For this rathâ€" er complicated job, a questionnaire was prepared so that information from the grammar school districts could be compared. Mrs. George Lyman and Mrs. George . Carr, coâ€"chairmen of the department of economic welfare, have interviewed local merchants and employees and are preparing an interesting report on local workâ€" ing..conditions in such industries as milk and laundries, old age comâ€" pensation in its actual practice, etc. The annual board meeting of the league will be held at 10 o‘clock preceding the luncheon, and it is hoped that all league members will attend to hear the reports on the years work which will be given then instead of in the afternoon. There was an attendance of al~ most ~two hundred persons at the candidates meetingâ€" at Lake Forest last Saturday.
