Too many people take an accomâ€" Egan of the Highland Park public library reveals a genuine liking for springs behind the smooth running of an establishment of books. Miss Egan maintains, "The attractive thing about library work is that it combines people and books. Most of you would be surprised at the number of lonely people at the liâ€" brary. No introductions being necâ€" essary, the library is the first place people come when they move to town, and a friendly greeting from the librarian means a great deal." Apparently a librarian has to have desk manner, somewhat on the orâ€" der of a bedside manner, to minisâ€" ter to the needs of library patrons. Sticking to her principle of interâ€" ested service, Miss Egan says about answering desk requests, "One has always to remember that the quesâ€" tions asked are not trivial and unâ€" necessary to the person asking." Miss Egan, who has been Highâ€" land Park‘s head librarian for three and a half years, speaks from a world of experience, having been public librarian for nine years in Clinton, lowa, and for a time in Boise, Idaho. But she states "There is nothing like this part of the country. Elsewhere you miss the lush green found along the North Her work has three aspects, the literary side, the business phase, and the housekeeping part. It inâ€" volves many things every day of the week, paying bills, helping at the desk to get an idea of the books the public wants, general superviâ€" Shore." Born in Racine, Wis., she was graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin, where she also went to library school. Performances will be given at 2:15 and 8:15 p.m., the doors openâ€" ing at 1 and 7 p.m. Twenty â€" two air conditioning units, installed at intervals around the cireumference of the world‘s largest tent, make it comfortable for the thousands who attend the big show. The new inaugural spectacle, proâ€" duced by Charles Le Maire, former designer for the Ziegfld Follies, is a streamlined pageant of almost unâ€" believable splendor. In the latter task she considers book cliâ€" ents‘ tastes to help her stock the shelves with new books. She traces trends and consults readers‘ interâ€" ests. This is done with ease, she comments, for "Readers will tell you readily and will even sit down and converse about their likings." Besides talking to library patrons, Miss Egan follows recommendations of the American Library Associaâ€" tion, which makes bimonthly reports with lists of approved books. In addition, certain books find their way to Highland Park as the result of her reading book reviews and following announcements made by publishers. Asked to give the greatest interâ€" est of the public, Miss Egan replied that the demand was for books on questions of the day, economic and international affairs, in particular. This, in her estimation, accounts The world famous Riding Cristiâ€" anis, bateback thrillers, with Lucio and Belmonte starring; the two Flying Concelo troupes and the Flyâ€" ing Comets, with Antoinette Conâ€" cello, only girl triple somersaulter, the Walkmirs, aerial perch marvels; the Torrence Dolores flying perch wonders; the Pallenbergs and their performing bears; the Rooneys, stelâ€" lar double trapeze artistsâ€"these are for the popularity of John Gunthâ€" er‘s "Inside Asia" at the present time, although high school students are finding time to read the six copâ€" ies of "Gone With the Wind," disâ€" covering they don‘t like it, and then reading it again. lighted as is a big New York musiâ€" cal show, the displays of The Greatâ€" est Show on Earth surpass all the massed attractions of former years. There is a heavier contingent of stellar European features with the circus than ever before. The reading habits of Highland Park are not different from those of other cities, Miss Egan declares, although she remarks, "It is true but unfortunate that advertising plays a major part in the demand for a book as happens when a book is reviewed over the radio." In her estimation, there never before was a time when advertisements played such a part. A better book may pass unnoticed, despite a librarian‘s efforts, for, as she pointed out, "Just as the public uses the toothâ€" paste which is most widely adverâ€" tised, so it uses the most widely adâ€" vertised book also." The horse numbers of the show are extraordinarily appealing, with William Heyer and Tamara Heyer featured in new and sensational numbers. Tex Elmlundt again scores with new liberty horse acts. Schuh is best described as the modâ€" ern version of the famous old exâ€" world‘s champion Ed "Strangler" Lewis, and uses the deadly headlock with all the effectiveness of the old "Strangler." Since both Schuch and von Schacht are among the rougher boys of the sport plenty of fireworks are expected.
