Tells of 25,000 Mile Trip Across U. 8. to Alaskan Wilds In this week‘s issue of the H1quâ€" LAND PazK Press is a continuation of the Round Robin letters, written to Highland Park friends by the Robert Patton family, during their 25,000 mile trailer trip across the United States and up the west coast to Seattle, Wash., where they emâ€" barked for Alaska. They began their trip May 26, 1988 and returned to in time for the opening of school, in order that their son Dick might reâ€" _ Because of lack of space, the letâ€" ter was omitted from last week‘s isâ€" sue of TEE PrEss, Each letter or episode is divided in two parts, due to the length of each, so that a comâ€" plete letter covers a period of two weeks. The following is a continuaâ€" tion of the first episode which apâ€" peared in THE PrEss issue of Nov. Our troubles are over and Sumâ€" ing‘s working great, getting a daily bath from the heavens above. Some one told me that the west is arid but evidently we are timing it just right to catch all the local showers. Sante Fe is a most interesting town where one of the oldest churches in the country is found, built back about 1540 by the Spanâ€" airds. We spent two days here viewing the old town, the Indian pueblos, etc. One day we drove way up in the mountains and I tried w‘ ease our expense account by catchâ€" ing a few trout out of a tea cup of water. I saw them, I coxed them, I offered them the freshest of salmon eggs direct from cold storage but they didn‘t like my looks. It even rained all the time I was fishing and I got back to the car looking like a drowned rat, with Sue fussing over the deepening shadows in the west and thinking of the steep roads ahead by the light of a silvery moon, if it stopped raining. The good book, "The Lure of the Southwest" put out by Rays Wibles company to extol the beauties of the country and tell how they could be better enjoyed when using "Mobilâ€" gas" told us to be sure to see Acoma "The city of the skies." It appears an Indian tribe built their pueble on top of a Mesa, rising 500 feet out of the plain with sheer cliffs on all sides. In order to reach it you climbed up steps cut in the stone with hand holds similarly hewn. We went up and were well repaid for our efforts, also paid well for the privilege. Right here let me say all the gold diggers are not in N.Y. C. A motley crew live in New Mexâ€" ico with dark skins. The first request was $1.00 a head to see the sights, then $1 for a camera, but when I started to take pictures I was inâ€" formed a movie was five bucks. Each Indian lassie then wanted the most she could get to have her picture took. Any way I got a lot of picâ€" tures and hope they turn out good. Grand Canyon is a magnificient spectacle, too vast to be beautiful, too barren to be pleasing. A great work of art by nature but both Sue and I felt rather negative emotions instead of being buoyed up by someâ€" thing surpassingly beautiful. The distances, the depths are too great to take in, although at sundown some of the drabness turns into soft pastel shades. An artist would apâ€" preciate the high lights and shaâ€" dows. The comfort of a trailer was shown reaching the north rim. We got to Flag Staff about 4 p.m. too early to put up for the night, so QualityCleaners RELIABLE LAUNDRY 322 N. The only thing we both don‘t like is making up the big bed. It is hard work. Each morning I haul out and start the hot water Bryce Canyon is really gorgeous, a vast arena filled with minarets of every size and shape tinted a wonâ€" derfully pretty shade of pink. You come onto them suddenly after crossâ€" ing a dusty barren plateau. There are 13 separate amphi theatres each with its own colony and grotesque outlines. Words cannot tell the story of the beauty, the oddity, the unusual sights that so unexpectedly pop into view one after another. We stayed at the lodge having left Sumâ€" ing in a church yard 60 miles away. Everyone told us the appropriate time to see the canyon was by sunâ€" rise. Sue and I got up, we shivered, we froze, we congealed, our teeth ichamnd but we saw the sun appear in the east and decided our beds were more attractive. Bryce Canâ€" yon is outstanding, something so unâ€" expectedly beautiful, as to be inâ€" conceivable. You simply can‘t picâ€" ture it and photos are drab in comâ€" parison to the real thing. there is hot water to shave, heater and by the time I am dressed Zion National Park is a rugged box canyon with sheer precipices several thousand feet high boxing it in. It is beautiful and the floor of the valley with its green is a welâ€" come relief to the barreness of the aired country. Behind our schedule we pushed on, seeing Boulder Dam and enjoyâ€" ing a much needed bath in Lake Mead, with the temperature 110 plus. Our thermometer wouldn‘t go any higher. That night we left Los Vegas, Utah at 9 p.m. to drive mcross the Mojave desert. Heat and more heat and we got here and are roasting in cool mounâ€" tain air. Sequoia is glorious, the most beautiful spot we have found. There is a fine grocery store where Sue filled her insides last night on steak, which she had bought. Episode I draws to a close, we sure like the trailer and being gypâ€" sies. We even tried out the tub on Dick the other day and it worked perfectly, but after hauling water for him, I decided I could go dirty another day or so.
