Saturday night our landlady at the hotel gave a big dance, no Siâ€" wash, and no liquor, just the white of Nenana. The Siwash problem is an acute one up in this country, on account of the liquor which makes them fight and raise the devil generally. The white people, who live in this country have handled Mike Cooney,a spry young lad of 65 had the boata 30 foot poling boat with low free board and plenty of ventilation overhead, there being no roof. We had our kick about everyone we talked to doubted whether it was heft enough to buck some of the current we were to hit, in fact it wasn‘t so we took Mike‘s motor of 4% h.p. Mike couldn‘t leave for a week, so we went to the hotel. During those days we outfitted, got our camping gear toâ€" gether and waited. Several boats were in so several "Siwash dances were held at the "Pioneer Hall." A Siwash dance is where Indian girls are present and if you think the breeds don‘t dress up and can dance you have another think coming. They have all been mission educated and the chief lesson they learn is that the white men don‘t like the natural aroma of the Red Man so they are as clean as whistles. They are all born with a desire to dance. In fact they are such good dancers and I mean ball room style that the white girls learn to dance as soon: as they learn to crawl to keep up. Well any way Sue and I took them in, Sue being a belle among the white boys. The Indian boys are not wanted and don‘t attend except to look on. There is a chain of general stores called the N.C. Co., which have been supplying Alaska for many years. They sell anything and everything from soup (in cans) to nuts (used on the threaded end of bolts). I had the name of the agent of the Nenana stere and im m ediately looked him up. He dropped what he was doing and we started out to locate a boat and a man to go up with us. Incidentally no one seemed to think we were accomplishing anyâ€" thing to write a book about, going up the Kantishna. started to beat up the surrounding country around Fort Yukon. He didn‘t seem heartbroken at the prosâ€" pect of six months in jail, in fact the natives rather enjoy such a vaâ€" cation, three square meals a day, much better than they get at home, light, heat and all modern convenâ€" iences, with nothing to do all day but rest and think what a hard life they are having. You know the Inâ€" dians are great thinkers. We got off the S. S. Yukon at Nenana with the rest of the sightâ€" seers, armed with a couple of names of residents of Nenana which I had gotten from the Marshall aboard, who was escorting an Indian prisâ€" oner to Fairbanks. Said individual had imbibed a little too freely and properly thrilled over our many hazardous experiences and hairâ€" breadth escapes. They occured so frequently and were of such a danâ€" gerous nature, that in six weeks, Sue increased her weight from 91 lbs. on going in to 103 lbs. on her return from the frozen fastnesses of the Arctic. Nature was not so good to me, as I lost completely the forward protusion, that was fast developing around my midships, due no doubt to four hearty meals enâ€" joyed on the steamers. You can see what peril will do to one. Several of the men folks took their daily dozen on the end camping, but we utilized the time learning about the country we were going into. Then it started to rain, a most welcome event at that time as there were very serious forest fires where we were headed for. The Tanana river started to rise and came up 6‘% feet in three days. Mike felt it unwise to start until the river stopped rising even when it stopped raining so we didn‘t get off for ten days. them much like the niggers in the with the Tanana tribes. Our boat was well loaded down. The first night we camped at an Indian fish camp where we rustled a couple of salmon just out of the first wheel. At lunch that day It was a gorgeous clear day when we shoved off down stream loaded grub, we had a caller, as a big black bear swam across the river just below us. However, when he saw us, inâ€" stead of charging with a roar and snarl he did a very. neat dive and swam underwater for the bank. I tried to get my camera but Mr. Bruin wasn‘t waiting for anything. Next day we stopped in at Toloâ€" vana roadhouse. It is a beautifully kept log cabin housing the P. O., Trading Post and dining room. Sleeping quarters are outside cabins. Mrs. Martin insisted on getting lunch for us, as she and her husâ€" band had known Mike for years. Shoving down stream we came to the mouth of the Kantishna, where 34 tb. He was an "old timer" having come into the Klondike in ‘98. About 8 years ago he got awâ€" ful lonesome, so took unto himself a native bride of 13 sumthers to comfort him in his old age. I don‘t know how much comfort she is, but she sure keeps him on his toes lookâ€" ing after her doings. When she can get some firewater, she imbibes freely and is none too easy to get along with. Then she is a firm beâ€" liever in "spice is the variety of life," so quite frequently takes trips off to see her native boy friends. It further is quite the custom for a native bride‘s relatives to pay long and frequent visits on the happy white groom. Our friend solved this problem quite neatly by building a guest house nearby where his wife‘s relatives were more than welcome to stay provided they brought their own grub along.
