Ratured as Second Clase Matter March 1, 1911, at the Post Odfise at Highinad Purk, Ilinets zen oik oricn! mal eeponeed t ies Tw stoald nos the ol t URGE SAFE AND SANE JULY 4th _ _ _ _ The annual toll of injuries resulting from the unrestricted use of fireworks in celebration of the Fourth of July is about to begin. ‘The Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness for many years has been waging a war against the sale and unrestricted use of fireworks in Ilinois. «Each year the mounting total of deaths and injuries from this cause has spurred on this civic organization. Last year the total number of injuries in Illinois resulting from fireworks, in connection with the Fourth of July celebrations, was 458, a reduction of fiftyâ€"five injuries from the preceding year of 1938, Alâ€" though the total figure has been reduced, the grim records still include the annual tragedy of at least one Illinois child destined for total blindâ€" ness as the price of Fourth of July fun. It is ironically true that the number of deaths caused by fireworks during the last thirty years exceed in number the casulalties suffered by the American forces in the Revolutionary War,. While 4,044 soldiers died in the American Revolution and 6,000 were injured, almost 5,000 persons have met their deaths and more than 100,000 have been injured in mccidents involving unrestricted use of fireworks. In 1989 the deaths of thirteen good Americans were caused by the indiscriminate use of fireworks in nine out of the fortyâ€"cight states â€" and one of the thirteen fatalities occurred in our own state of Illinois. ‘The perennial toll of deaths and injuries from the unregulated use of fireworks continues with grim reality and only will be curbed when all communities awaken to the danger and take proper action to halt traffic in these explosives. enacting and enforcing laws against the sale and unrestricted use of fireworks. In many instances, however, due to the lack of such laws for counties, the restrictions have been applied only to the corporate limits of each town with fireworks bootleggers operating unhampered just over the boundaries. The Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness has no quarrel with the pleasure obtained by spectators watching pyrotechnic displays when such exhibitions are staged by pyrotechnic experts. The society projects its campaign against the unrestricted and unregulated use of fireworks. STORAGE FUR. The planks are: TARIFFâ€"The........ party believes that the tariff policy of the U.S. should foster the inâ€" terest of the country as a whole, not sectional or group interests. It recâ€" ognizes that the longâ€"time interest of the country demands stimulation of international trade. Therefore, the .................. party promises that it will promote such a legislative policy, based on scientific research and carried out by the Executive Department. Asking support for the planks to be presented by the National League of Women Voters to the Republican and Democratic Conventions, Mrs. George G. Bogart, president of the Illinois League of Women Voters, addressed letters this week to the state‘s delegates. The party believes that eflichnt‘ and responsive government is necesâ€" sary to preserve the faith of the people in a democracy. We beâ€" lieve that the merit principle of seâ€" lecting personnel offers the best method of finding and keeping those persohs who will give the public efâ€" fective . service. We, therefore, pledge the....................party to abolish the spoils system and to establish a merit system throughout the pubâ€" lic service, federal, state, and local. "Perhaps I should add that these two planks represent the considered conclusion of a large group of inâ€" telligent, publicâ€"spirited women, afâ€" filiated with no political party and with no hope of, or interest in, jobs & cents per single copy June 32, 23, 14 FKy L. or other material reward. In 1986, the Democratic and Republiâ€" can parties advocated a measure such as the Ramspeck Bill, with the Democratic platform especially exâ€" Ehm- the ps e since these party platforms were made, but much remains to be done. With regard to the tariff plank, the League has studied scientific tariff making ever since 1924, conâ€" sidering the relation of tariff to livâ€" ing costs, to the maintenance of peace or involvement in war, and to the promotion of a new kind of ordered policy that would be adâ€" justed to the welfare of the counâ€" try as a whole. Granted that the parties are . obliged to set a fourâ€"year course at a time when the public mind is aroused by immediate emergencies! Yet the planks offered concern matâ€" ters bound to be of importance durâ€" ing any administration elected to office next fall, and the League beâ€" lieves it is doing the parties a servâ€" ice to assure them that there are voters who at this time are eonâ€" cerned with long term policies. As has been its custom for 20 years, the National League of Womâ€" en Voters will send delegations to both the Democratic and Republiâ€" can national conventions this sumâ€" mer. At the Republican session headquarters will be established at the Ritzâ€"Carlton hotel in Philadel phis, opening on Saturday, June 22, and for the Democratic one in Chiâ€" cago at the Stevens hotel on July 11 Building operations on Glencoe‘s two new theatres have been stopped, pending negotiations of a merger of interests in the two movies by the Glencoe Theater Corporation, which was building on Vernonâ€" avenue, south of Hazel avenue, and Sam C. Meyers and A. J. Balaban, who had part of the excavation work done for their proposed theater at the northeast corner of nden and Scott avenues, in the Hubbard Woods section of Glencoe. Construction of the Vernon aveâ€" nue theater is now well underway, with a good portion of the walls completed. A farewell party to Horace Mann school, Glencoe, was held by teachâ€" ers and alumni Monday evening. After the end of the school term Friday the building was to be razed to make way for the new Winnetka post office.
