Another four strokes and the poor sweating golfer finds himself on the green . . . quite at loss as to what the next move may be. He hauls out a rusty putâ€" ter . . . putts and screams in rage when the ball rolls gently into a convenient sand trap. After bashâ€" ig clouds of sand into the air . . . he finally connects with the long lost ball, and sends it whistling over the green onto another fairway. About this time, ‘clubs begin to fly through the air . . . oaths are being flung through foamed lips and hankerâ€" chiefs are wiping watery foreheads. Yes, this funny game seems easy, but it really fools one. I swing the club, clouds of turf acâ€" company the ball. When the rotund,. white missle ascends in the air, most new golfers find that it invarâ€" iably curves one way or the other â€" . . a Aook or a slice. One is as bad as the other. The green player enâ€" deavors to overcome a hook and deâ€" velopers a violent slice . . . that‘s my experience. The hook is the greatest pitfall for the new golfer, in my humble esâ€" timation. It is the most baffling problem in this popular pastime. Slicing can be overcome, as can hooking, simply by altering the grasp on the club, so I‘ve been told. Better take lessons, and start out on the right path, They call golf fun, but I get the biggest kick out of seeing so many unhappy, wornâ€" out, hungry looking faces while out on the links. Goif is improved by frequent practice . . . and requires much perseverance and patience ... little progress can be made without any of these qualities in the player. Well, T‘ll point out a few more facts concerning the game next week. Bye the bye, this peculiar game was anciently known as Goff, or Gowff and was a game of Dutch origin, but generally identified with Scotland, where as early as 1457 the local Parliament inveighed against its abuse . . . and whence it has become popularized throughout the Englishâ€"speaking world. Currently attending the W.G.A. derby at Westmoreland Comg club, Exmoor wotmen have a schedule on deck for the residue of planned evefits is a unique tournaâ€" ment to be held August 13. The arangement in this event will be a% follows: Mo#t 4‘s h class A; most 5‘s in class B; most @s in class C, Ye old column is dedicated to those local golf aspirants who know very little about the lingo of the game . . . and maybe a few facts concerning the functioning and imâ€" plements used therein. Let‘s hope this doesn‘t seem too naive . . . which it will undoubtedly be to golf parâ€" ticipants. Usual paraphenalia conâ€" cerning forthcoming events on the local links will be found in the latâ€" ter section of the column. Now for this little game ealled golf. When one sees action pictures of good golfers in the news, one thinks how really simple the game Now for schedules and forthcomâ€" ing events in the local clubs. Exâ€" moor is planing a match play against par on the 10th, and its usual mixed foursome event for Thursday the 15th, according to Joe DePalma, Exmoor goif authority. On the 17t\ a best ball twosome event will be given at Exmoor, while on the same day the third round match play of the Fullerto® cup tourney will be played, DePaima is . . . if one knows how to swing. I think swinging is the most imporâ€" tant part of gh? game.
