Human nature is . funny thing. At the political meetings prior to gheflargt Highland Park mayortlty election the public turned out in " most unprecedented numbers to see what all the shooting was that.,At that time the average citizen was an ears and all eyes where the _op- eration of his 1oeartrovernment was concerned, bat since that time the onlyoccasion when he hi! express- ed more than passing interest in what has bemrqtointt on at the city hall has been when he bu had a personal axe to grind. _ ., H The unfortunate thing with this iiihiidii0hiit" -ire have dubbed "Be. tween Eteetionitis" is that it is catching and the group most likely to succumb to it is the city council u This writer has attended every council meeting since he took over the conduct of this column some six- teen months ago and in the vernac- ular of the writers of proverbs he “knows Mot he speaks.” When the citizen, himself, doesn't take the time to drop over to the city hall now and then to see what irtrointr on he can hardly blame the council for the indifference that body might show to let him know arhae 4sr---tmmrpirintr-1sehimr-9w icenes. OfBeia1 releases to the press and the discussion of sub- jects brought up at the public meet- ings are usually as devoid of meat as a well licked bone. It is this writers opinion that ninety percent of T the matters discussed by the council at the so-called closed meet- ings could be aired in the open coun- eil chamber with no harm done. ths casionally a member of the council might be embamsed by subjects that might pop out in mum; ed discussion but any individual who is as thin skinned as that has no place in public life. ' The present administration has built the frame work for a commu- nication system between the city sacrament andthe citizenshnt the "follow through" needs a bit of pol- ishing up. - The Citizens Advisory committee was formed on December 16 to lend a hand' in formulating policies and selling them, as it were, lo the public. To date any activities of this committee since its inception have not come to light. We believe that the formation of this commit- tee is one of the-most important steps forward taken by this admin- istration and our sincere hope is that it is not left to die on the vine. The rebirth a: the‘long barman fieial plan of the City of Highland Park was announced on January 6. On January 27 the council author- izedrthe mayor to hire the firm, of Jacob L. Crane to bring this plan up to date. When it is completed and ready for council action it is to be hoped that a large' part of the members of the community know something about it. It goes with out saying that this plan' is an im- portant document as far as the fu. ture welfare of the community is concerned. The disposition of the problems pertaining, to through streets and apartment houses aione plan worthwhile. . ', It is the belief of many that the citizens of the eoznmunity be fur- ther enlightened on the progress of the' city’s Health Plan as outlined'by the Mayor several months ago. A survey at the time was made by a member of the medical profession but what recommendation, if any, were mode as a result of his inven- tigation, have never been made pub. lie. , As the present adtttittiatratiott nears the belt wey work in ite term of omce it would pet-hep: he well for it to do e better job of “follow, Ing through” on its public relations work.
