K.~Hardacre, Pub. ~~â€"â€"Previousâ€"to â€"his â€" latestâ€" work, â€"Mr. Yutang wrote the popular book, "Moment In Pekin." This has reâ€" ceived great praise and: the author has used this laudation as an inspiâ€" ration to write a new and equally as delightfulâ€"a book. His latest writing is aptly entitled "With Love and Irony." As one has said in sumâ€" marizing this new creation of Yuâ€" tang‘s: " . . . the wise and merry Chinese philosopher offers here more remarks ~and glances about â€" the world> and itsâ€" peolpe, East and peopleâ€"of Chinese â€"and their hardâ€" hips; I ge and with hisâ€" refreshing writing techâ€" nique, he philosophizes. There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Yutang E. A. Schneider of Fort Sheridan will be a guest of the local Chess club al.:x;sday evening. Mr. Schneiâ€" der who is a recruit at Fort Sheriâ€" dan was attracted by the Chess problem appearing in THg HicHâ€" LAND PARK PRESS, and inquired into the possibility of attending a meetâ€" ing of the club. w .t%wder’s attention from what is betng said to the less effective means of how it is being said! These are the only faults that I have to find. Excluding these defects, I think that "With Love and Trony" is commendable and worthy of readâ€" ing if one honestly wishes to know what a Chinese writer thinks. This book is not "hot off of the press." Rather, it is about a month old and therefore it has had a fair amount of time to mellow and to beâ€" come established. I think that Mr. Yutang could have presented: his unreserved opinions with more subâ€" tility. He is quite frank in this book and I think that he could have been far more effective if he had gone about his vivid writing casually and unobstrusively. Sometimes he tries too hard .to shock his readers, and the result is that he tends to divert "With Love and Irony" is a book of short essays, sketches, and satires with a biting wit about them. Mr. Yutang discusses a wide range of subjects in the pages of his book. Truly "With Love and Irony" is a conglomeration of written mental impressions gleaned from the keen observations that he has made. He cleverly knits his many ideas toâ€" gether and turns out a highly readâ€" ableâ€"book. â€"After one reads "With Love and Irony," one has a pretty clear opinion of Lin Yutang, the man. In short then the book is nothing more ‘than an enjoyable presentation â€"of. one man‘s beliefs about this peculiar world and its peculiar people. â€"â€"â€" > #> is a teacher,° He is the kind of teacher, however, who can make one observe and learn with little effort. This I think requires skill, and Lin Yutang has it. _ 3 *A Many prominent writers have praised Lin Yutang,. All of them agree that Mr. Yutang has a mesâ€" sage that should be received by all thinking people. ' & 2901 pages. Reviewed by Whitt N.
