T. L. Osborn, permanent represenâ€" tativeâ€"of â€"theâ€"Coâ€"ordinatingâ€"Council; Mrs. Tom Wyles, representing the Communiity Center; Chief of Police Rex Andrews, representing the City of Highland Park; Mr. A. N. Thursâ€" ton, representing the Adult Educaâ€" tion group; Leonard Nieter, repreâ€" senting the Chamber of Commerce; Cloud Wampler, representing the Citizen Advisory Council; Harry Aiston, representing the American Legion and who will serve as secreâ€" tary of the organization; and Mrs. Frank J. Ronan, representing the various churches in the city. In adâ€" dition to the foregoing, the chairâ€" man: of the Coâ€"ordinating Council who is changed every 90 days will also serve as a member of the group. The committee came into official being on last Friday when the temâ€" porary organizing committee creâ€" ated at the initial meeting met with Mayor Ronan to name its permanâ€" ent members. Chosen as chairman of the execuâ€" tive committee was Mayor Ronan. Other members selected were: Mrs. U ~â€" The first step on the committee‘s program following its organization is a meeting scheduled for early in March with officials from Fort Sherâ€" idan and the Great Lakes Naval training station for the purpose of obtaining the latter‘s reactions and suggestions pertaining to the organâ€" ization‘s work and future program. The importance to the city of creâ€" ating a recreational directing body and information bureau.to serve the 25 to 50 thousand men that will be constantly stationed at the two nearby military posts cannot be too greatly exaggerated. It is conservâ€" ately estimated that the payroll Alone of the men at Fort Sheridan and the Great Lakes will approximâ€" ate a half a million dollars monthly. What such a vast addition to the @rea‘s purchasing power will mean to local merchants may easily be surmiged. â€" One of the first steps in the proâ€" Rram will be the founding of some Sort of a center around which the Committee may build the activities blanned for its temporary guests. With the eooperation of the federal Rovernment and perhaps the Works Progress Administration it is hoped that a vacant store and an adminiâ€" Strating employee may be obtained. Other spots in the city that may. be opened to the soldiers and sailâ€" !’a for possible centers of activity Wour CE ly gouemmenl: City Council By Ermors M. Mureny are aiso pilanned as part of Ln€ pro= gram, An information bureau where the men may obtain data on various recreational activities open to them is also under consideration. This bureau will also serve as a,clearing house for information pertaining to vacant rooms and apartments availâ€" able for rent to men in the service. To prevent gouging of tenents by over ambitious landlords an officially approved list of places available will be kept on file. include the Community Center, the Y.W.C.A., the Women‘s club, and Other activities ‘similar to the groups of soldiers now attending the high school‘s engineering classes are also planned as part of the proâ€" tee‘s activities will be centered in the civil side of the problem. The promotion of safety and the probâ€" lem of policing these men within the city limits will come under the direction of~ Chief Andrews and his men. ; Getting â€"back to questions of purely local interest, this writer learned from the mayor this week that the new incinerator is ready for its initial capacity test run. A largeâ€" amount of refuse has been accumulated over the weekâ€"end which is scheduled to be used in the test. Those who are of a technical turn of mind or who are interested in the capacity of the plant beyond present needs will await the results of this test with interest. * Following the publicity in the local papers concerning the coming deadline for motor vehicle licenses, a sharp pick up in business was noted at the city hall in this deâ€" partment. However, gratifying as this increase was to city officials, the mayor reports that there are still some eighteen hundreéd residents of Highland Park who have not purâ€" chased. their 1941. tags. . The police department has been issued strict ingtructions to start picking up deâ€" ‘inquent motorists on March 1st. Human nature being what it is the license department expects to be swamped the last few days of the month unless the members of the community will ‘cooperate by buying their tags now. If the appliâ€" cations come in fairly evenly durâ€" ing the ~remaining days of the month the department can take care of them easily but if everybody waits until the last minute it will be )l)'hysic.lly impossible to meet the rush. The council‘s next regular meetâ€" ing is scheduled for Monday eveâ€" ning, February 24. The approval of the new traffic code submitted at the meeting a week ago is on the council calendar for this session. Some action might also be taken on the Central street railroad station improvement, WLat .gl ja :D.Oing l ,M?A/antl p arL gwnl:s ‘Ar Coming u/uL THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20â€" 12:15 p.m. H. P.
