It is a friendly and neighborly village and an ideal place in which to rear our children. The Deerfield Chamber of Commerce this week has inaugurated its first Dollar Days to put before the citiâ€" zens the many opportunities offered in buying in Deerâ€" field. In stride with the fast growing community is Deerâ€" field State Bank, widely known for its rapid growth and stability. In the past seven years it has increased from 700 to 2,000 accounts. There were more than 300 new customers added to its records in 1940 and in the previous year, 1939, it reached the half million mark. At this date it is nearing the three quarter million mark. This bank being a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corâ€" poration is under both Federal and State supervision and now employs a large staff of local workers. Deerfield was settled in 1835 and its Centennial celeâ€" bration in 1935 showed 100 years of progress. Deerfield became an incorporated village in April, 1903 and by 1909 had 500 inhabitants. Today the census shows 2,278. Toâ€" day there are no vacant homes or apartments. Building permits were increased 90 percent in 1940 over the prevâ€" ious year and indications for 1941 point to an even bigger building: program. Modernization of old homes has been very popular this past year. Paved streets, good street lighting, adequate police and fire protection add to the desirability of Deerfield as a permanent place in which to live. Deerfield is a wonderful place in which to live. Its adâ€" vantages are many. Its location is idealâ€"three miles from Lake Michigan, half an hour‘s ride to or from Chiâ€" cago on a good train schedule, near the cityâ€"yet far enough away to be urban. Deerfield has modern stores, a fast growing bank, a Building and Loan association, two public schools and a parochial school, one of the finest high schools in the state, four churches, and civic organâ€" izations interested in the growth of the village and its advancement. Bock was shot through the stomâ€" ach, the bullet passing through part of the liver and out through the ribs. The wound was accidentâ€" ally selfâ€"inflicted, while he was walking in a ficld a short distance from his home. Mrs. Bock said: "Kenneth was out shooting at tin cans with his brother‘s .22 calibre rifie, when he stumbled and fell on the gun. which discharged. As he was not familiar with the handling ~f guns, the youth feared parental reprimand. Stumbling his way h»me, he entered the house and reâ€" turned to the store room where the gun was kept.
