The council had agreed that if the majority of persons returning the post card ballots in each district were in favor of consolidation, the present _ outstanding . petitions would be completed and steps taken to hold a vote on consolidaâ€" tion. â€" Conversely if a majority of the ballots returned in either disâ€" trict was opposed to consolidation, then the council would stop the eonsolidation ° matter completely. Mr. Sheter urged all present to mark and return their post cards and asked them to pass the inforâ€" mation gained at the meeting on to their neighbors and friends. The meeting was then thrown open to questions from the floor. It was pointed out that the City of Highland â€" Park : contained more than the two elementary school disâ€" tricts involved in this discussion and the question was asked why all of these districts were not includâ€" ed. Another question brought out the . fact that the teachers in the 107 district had ovéerwhelmingly votoed against consolidation, and it was further developed that the employing of special service teachâ€" ers could be shared with 108 even if the districts remained separate entities, as presently 107 had plans to share a special teacher with one of the schools in Lake Forest. Furâ€" ther questions brought out the fact that everyone thought that the 107 schools at the present time were well run and that the children were getting a good education. one in Highland Park wanted the best possible education for their children, and that it had always been the policy of the 107 school board to levy the maximum perâ€" missible rate for educational purâ€" poses and to spend all or more than the taxes actually collected. He said that his study of the budget of district 107 convinced him that there would be prac+tically no savâ€" ings in operations under a consoliâ€" dated district and that any new fields of instruction could only be paid for by eliminating something presently given to our 107 pupils. This was true because everyone had agreed that consolidation in itâ€" | self would not provide additional funds for either district. us A Resolutions of condolence, Mr. Horace Vaile, in closing for the opponents of consolidation, stated thtt::' was sure that all of the speak@rs agreed that everyâ€" district 107 had more past assets to contribute to the consolidated district, but that he was only inâ€" terested in the future operation of the sghools. ‘ He pointed out that he believed that district 107 could have the services of a superâ€" intendent as well as a principal, like at present, at no extra cost to the district. He further thought that new fields of construction could eventually be opened to the consolidated district that 107 could not have alone. ‘ Mr. Philip Ringer, who favored consolidation, pointed out that in his judgment it made no substantiâ€" al difference to the tax payers that . Mr. Avery Jones, who spoke against consolidation, told of the fine job that theâ€"107 school board had always done ; ofthonz&tht district 107 itself would have in the future that could be taken care of by its own resources; of the fact that 107 would become a minority ‘group in the consolidated district; and of many‘of the assets that 107 would contribute to the consolidaâ€" Just hefore the close 6f the onstrating how neighboring school districts could consolidate and opâ€" erate in unity. h z (Continued from page 1) _ .
