PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS ELECTRICITY SUPPLY T H E EI.ECTRIClTYmncbepmdwdnitislned. When the combination of all our customers‘ requirements produces its greatest demand â€"usually for an hour or more in the morning and again in the afternoonâ€"we have what we call our "peak" load. s Asumple.bet‘mnthebolnoflbom9anduondukmming'hn-ny customers are using extra lighting and industrial plants ase at their maximum operations, the total use of clectricity frequently reaches a point where requirements for service strain all of our present resources. This shortage of generating capacity, now cxisting in most areas, has become 2 national problem. As soon as wartime limitations were relaxed, additional equipment was ordered, but because of the wartime delays and the increased length of time required to obtain new equipment, it has not been possible for us to match the unprecedented and continuing growth of the use of clectricity with the installation of corresponding amounts of In normal prewar years, this did not occur because we were able to provide more and more plant capacity in advance of increased requirements for service. The normal excess of plantâ€"capacity over peak use always left a comfortable margin, permitting units to be taken out of service for overhauling, and providing reserve in case of mechanical failure. Even during the war, although we were not permitted to add new capacity, we were able to meet exceedingly high demands for war production, as a result of our policy of providing capacity in advance of requirements. of conditions affecting clectric service in the area we serve. ‘This information is given you in line with our policy of keeping the public informed about i tivities.
