New Trier‘s Green Wave Drowns Little Giants 52â€"0 Thursday, Oct. 27, 1949 Driving relentlessly, the Green Wave of New Trier came up and drowned a weak and injuryâ€"ridden Highland Park eleven under a tidal wave of scoring last Saturâ€" day, October 22, on the Little Giant‘s home field. Highland Park grabbed the opening kickoff, but the attack was soon stymied by New Trier‘s strong forward wall. As soon as the New Trier players got their hands on the pigskin, they began to roll. Their first TD came as little Dick O‘Keefe scooted around end for 32 yds and a score. A few minutes later New Trier took over again and climaxed a long march with an 18 yd aerial score from O‘Kelley to James. Both tries for extra points were blocked. Midway in the second quarter New Trier scored another touchâ€" down, this one on a 31 yd. sprint by their great Negro halfback, Eddie O‘Kelley. Highland Park was not without glory in this half. Her attack, alâ€" though not powerful, looked much improved over that of last week. In the third quarter, the roof fell in on H.P.‘s bedraggled deâ€" fenders as New Trier put her vaunted machine in high gear and added 21 points to the score, while holding the Blue and White attack in check. The last quarter was less hectic. New Trier had her third team in and they could score only two touchdowns against the tiring Litâ€" tle Giants. Aside from the improved lonn‘ of the Little Giants in the first half, the running of Don Piper and Paul Jones, and some booming punts by Lou Grimmeison, the H.P. rooters had little to cheer about. Grimmeison, by the way, is one of the league‘s leading punters to date. ring down the curtain on the football season by traveling to Maywood to take on the boys from New Tries James S. Froshâ€"Soph 26 to 13 Scoring twenty points in the last half, New Trier‘s Froshâ€"Soph came from behind last Saturday to whip Coach Grover‘s "Ponies" 26 to 13 for their second loss in five starts. Highland Park‘s illâ€"fated attack was lead by Franko Picchietti, who scored both of their TD‘s. New Trier, after tying the score in the third quarter, went ahead to win on two quick scores in the final period by their full back Lennon,. Mermen Anticipate Good Finish in League With little more than a week remaining until the start of pracâ€" tice, the Highland Park high school swimming team is already beginnâ€" ing to think of workouts in the local pool in the hope of bettering last year‘s record. The team lost such outstanding swimmers through graduation as Roger Morrison, Keane Block, Russ Clark, and Jack Beck. Acâ€" cording to head coach, Robert Kendig, the success of this year‘s team will depend upon "how well last year‘s froshâ€"soph swimmers adjust to varsity events and upon the amount of practice they have had this past summer." With Gerson Widoff, Phelps Langtry, John Peterson, and Daâ€" vid Wolfson returning to handle the crawl stroke chores, Andy: Spiegel the breast stroke, and David Lasier and Tom Spiel the backstroke, the team should be fairly well equipped to meet the test of Suburban league competiâ€" tion. Spiegel, Lasier, and Widoff will probably comprise this year‘s medley relay team, and Ken Hirsch will handle the diving. Mr. Kendig is counting on nvâ€"‘ eral members of last year‘s froshâ€" soph ‘ team to be of help in strengthening some of the weaker departments. ‘ Ronnie Block and Alan Kidd will assist in the crawl events, John Hansmann in the breast stroke, and Stan Kessler in the backtroke.
