Said bars shall be imbedded in the concrete oneâ€"half (%) the thickness of the pavement below the top surface of said pavement and shall extend into the concrete slab equally on both sides of the joints: Metal caps or sleeves shall be placed on alternate opposite ends of the said dowels. The entire oneâ€"half (%) of the bar on which the metal caps are placed shall be first coated with heavy grease. Petroleum olls shall not be used for this purpose. The said metal caps shall be approxiâ€" mately five (5) inches long, shall be indented to provide.limiting stop for the dowel bar and shall provide unobstructed expansion space of not less than one (1) inch to permit movement of the dowel bar. Said caps shall fit the dowel bar tightly, and the closed end shall be water tight. The said dowel bars shall be truly perpendicular to the expansion joints and parallel to the surfuce of the pavement. Horizontal spacing bars to keep the dowel bars in the proper alignment shall be provided and securely wired to each dowel bar. Said spacing bars shall be smooth, round reinforcement bars oneâ€"half (%) inch in diameter. The concrete for the pavement shall be composed of Portland cement, torâ€" pedo sand, gravel and water mixed in such proportions so as to produce a workâ€" wbie plastic mass of concrete having a compression strength of not less than w.qmmm-nflmwdmtmdwl-mflm a inch at the age of fourteen (14) days when tested by standard methods. Dowel bars shail be held parellel to the surface of the proposed pavement by metal chairs or supports. Excavation shall not include the excavation for manholes, catch basins, manboleâ€"catch basins, inlets, inlet manholes, storm sewers, connections, house service connections, macadam pavemment replacement, sidewalk repiacement, driveway replacement, valve vaults, manholes, catch basin adjustments, new valve vaults, meter pit adjustment, water service exâ€" tensions, tree removals or planting, hydrant removals, or excavation for the straight curb; such excavation shall be incidental to the improvement and shali be included in the unit cost of the specific unit of work to be done.
