In maintaining a gravel road they Keep a layer of fine, loose material on the road. Small crushed gravel with n®_oinder Rives the best results. The patrol man begins at one ditch and with the grader Made set nearly square across the roaa mores a small amount of material toward* the center, then when he turns artnad he comes back on the same side and moves the material farther toward* the center and v. so on until he has worked clear to the opposite ditch from whleh he started. He thus avoids a row of loose material and stones down the center of the road a* occurs when the material is worked toward the center from both sides of the road. Next, time over he begins at the opposite side of the road from which he started before. They keep this process up even through the dry Weather. After a rain the patrolman first goes over the road with a grader then with a planer. Wisconsin is dotted with short stretches of concrete road. The idea is to keep all of the main roads In good passable condftlon all the time aad to gradually concrete them as fast as the funds become available, We believe that it is possible to work out » plan to build and maintain the i State Aid Roads of MfHenry County on V? a par with those of Wisconsin. Considerable stretches of the main roads are In shape for patrol maintenance now and by rebuilding short stretches here and there, the main roads of the county could soon be brought up to an wpellent coadition. !W H.
