Started at a Tin when the financial condition of ". country was not propltioris for such (Enterprise, the encouragement for flitur* was certainly not very flat- iWrtaf. But our intercourse with the people of McHenry county had con vinced U6 that there was room at Mc- lllenry for a first class, energetically inducted paper, one that would al- fSways be up to the times in local news, is and devote itself to the interest of the people rather than individuals. Under - these circumstances we determined to || niXke the experiment. From the out • |3t«et we were met with an ungenerous ^business opposition from some of twsr f 1 ootemporaries in the county--an op- position which covertly and sneakingly r leveled its darts against war business integrity. People were"buttou holed," ^ and assured that the PLAINDEALER could not live three months, and that J if theysubwstbe^or It they were s«pe k to be fewfewlled. Our only answer to Jp; thia was t» keep right at work. It took but little time to prove that when tlie 'i PLAINDEALKR reached the people it m found its friends. Earnest men in various towns laid their shoulder to the wheel and our circulation began to ircreaee rapidly. We instituted a ;|f system«f local correspondence in every li town, and in every way that our re sources could devise we have endeavor ^ g ed to make a paper that was useful and interesting to the people. How far we | kave succeeded In the latter is not for ' «w to say, but we have some evidence that our labor FOR STATISTS ATTORNEY. Hon. Ira R' Curtis, of Marengo who js « candidate for State's Attorney for this county, was in this village on Wednesday last. Mr. Curtis i» one of the most talented young lawyers in McHenry county. He has served one term as Member qf the Legislature, which position he filled with credit to himself and honor to his constituents. The office of State's Attorney Is aw im portant one, and should be filled by none but a man of known ability, and tried integrity. Such a man Mr. Cu'tis is known to be, and the people of Mc- Ilenrv county will do themselves honor by electing him to that office, the coming Fall. We believe we do not exageraie when we say that he is the first choice of two-thirds at least of the voters in this section of the county. EDITOR PLAINDKALER:-- Not long since I noticed, in looking »over your paper, that Josiah Dwight would be a candidate for Circuit Clerk of McHenry County this fall. Mr. Dwight is well and favorbly known in this community and the business of said office would not suffer if Intrusted to the charge of so competent a man. Besides Mr. Dwight is, and always lias been, a staunch Republican, though entirely outside of the ring, who are endeavor ing to force upon the people one of their owif stripe. Mr. Dwight has don® the business of the office mentioned altnost constantly for the last twenty years, and in all this times having held the oflUsly .himself only four years. If the people Xnrn out And attend the Caucuses and Uu u the cold shoulder to those gentlemen ^rho wow^ very much like to run McHenry County for theJr own political purposes, Mr. DwfgM will certainly/deceive the nomination^ and be elo>*ed Circuit Clerk of ou| CountyJ^s Fali,. . 0F TTIE PEOPLE. NUNDA. ••••-n EDITOR PLAINI>EALER AS I have •t seen any correspondent from thi» [place in the last few numbers of yo aper and thinking perlmfw the t thin# tlin|«^our plac® had ntirely col lapsed A^rtli our Vickie Fao ory, I will reassure tyiem th*t Nunda is yet alive and growipfir ^nd many substantial improvemerts hajje and are being made. Our Street Commissioner has been on the w^rj&th for sometime and many nc^ed improvements on, our streets ha/e been made and yet the good work on. Some new build ings have««en put up and many old ones ne#ly painted. Dr. Watson it erect^g a large building to be used for a Dug Store. Business is reviving me and our merchants are getting tter natured and we hope they will in time recover their former pleasant and agreeable ways. The political canvas Is gradually growing in interest as the candidates are being dissected. The Cincinnati nominees are fast gaining the confi* dence of the people and those that felt much disappointed at first at the result of the Convention, arc now willing to concede that Hayes and Wheeler com> bine much political strength, unques tioned honesty and ability, and great moral and social worth. Most of the tl-admtnistration Republicans are Itlsfied with Hayes and Wheeler And 'ill give him a hearty support. We understand that the firm of llsworth & Magoon has again changed [r. Magoon having sold his interest out to Doctor Sanborn of Chicago, and as the Doctor has got the spondulics, first-class rigs may be found at their Livery establishment at all' hours of the day. We find that the New Era has been looking up the Tilden and Hendricks voters in our place, and has classed Capt. J. E. Beckley as one of them. Had he given the Captain a call he could have assured him to the contrary, and that he is solid for Hayes and Wheeler. Tilden and Hendricks have some warm supporters here and wheth er the New Era was interested in fa vor of that ticket or looking for voters for the~"Rag Money" ticket we was un able to learn. Ira has gone to the great Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia. A Raspberry festival was held in Growers Hall. Tuesday eating, under the auspices of the Baptist society, and was largely attended by our citizens who \vei>e both hungrv and thirsty I think by the demand for cakes, lemon ade and fruits. A good social time, en joyed by all, and a haddsome tonus for the church was the result. Church Festivals have become almost a mania Many of our farmers have finished theJr haying aucl some have commenced harvesting. Wheat Is pronounced a poor crop. TYRO. I®"*The Beaver Dam Citizen My«: "Badger Girl is doing some trotting this season which makes lerownersand ail others in this section who are inter ested in fast horses feel proud of her. We»k before last she made a record of 2 :22£ winning the race and a purse of $850. Next Tuesday she will trot at Dexter Park, Chicago, and a number of our ci tzejis have expressed a determi nation to attend. BeputillcRit District ConTention.
