While at vrmrk on his farm, he was approached by a well- dressed, genteel and suave stranger who introduced himself as an attorney from Albany county. "Your name is Wheeler,'* says the "attorney." "Yes" was the response. Then the "legal light" went oh to tell him that Amos Burton, of N>w Scotland, had died less than a year ago and left behind him two magnificent farms in New Scotland valued at $25,000 each, which were awaiting the coming forward of the next of kiu to claim them. The "attor ney in his ofl-hand, persuasive way, went on to show the hitherto content ed tiller of the Massachusetts soil, that h«, and he only, was the next of kin. end by the laws of fight as well as con sanguinity was entitled to tht posses sion of the lordly estate. The bait took. Although astounded by his unexpected good fortune at first visions of life as a landed proprietor on a large seal® succeeded, and Wheeler eagerly asked the details as to when and how he could get the necessary in- formatron so as to take immediate possession. The little preliminary , ef a fee must fir?t be paid for the trouble the attorney had taken to apprise him of his good f01 tune, and tlie expenses incurred, and the $100 demanded was quickly handed over. "Write to the Surrogate, at Albany,'1 was the injunc tion of the attorney, "and he will fur nish full particulars, or you may call at his office and examine his records for yourself." With that the attorney de parted, promising to return i*» a few days with additional proof. The few days passed, no attorney appeared, and Wheeler, preferring to satisfy him self rather than write, extracted more money from his hard earnings, and came hither, only to find that he had been duped. His chagrin and Mortifi cation at learning that he had beeu victimized was great, but be departed much wiser than he entered, and will not in future look, as next of kin, for the estate of persons whom he never heard of before.--Albany (2V. The editor of this paper was the Pontifex Maximus, whose duty it was to chronicle all the important events of the year. The news was written on white wooden tablets, and attached to the Residences of the citizens. It must have been a Very curious sight to see the oid Romans crowding around the tablets to get a look at the latest news. But the thirst after knowledge and the curiosity of tlie people grew rapidly and in such 4 measure that the government, the only issue of the journal, found itself obliged to issue a daily, which ap peared either on tablets hung out in public, or was writen in red chalk on the walls of the houses. The contents were simply news; from the want of the necessary materials political arti cles were not to be had. Nevertheless, according to the view of the Boman government, it was a true journal, and intended as reading matter for the public.
