In fact many did not seem to know or care that an election was being held at all, while others would walk straight past the polls and did not take interest enough to stop and vote. And this too at what should be considered one of the most important elections held. The following ib the vote reoeived bv the different candidates: For Supreme Court--Bonjanita R. Sheldon, 175 votes. Circuit Isaac O. Wilson t$8 vote?. Charles Kellum95votes. Hiram H.Cody 79 votes. pi f l ' S*e?v' $SrDti. Mary.Walker, with his usual assurance, made herself oonspicuots in the Senate last week by thumping on the floor with his cane. The door keepers attempted to bustle her out, but he bravely held her ground, obser ving that he had come to stay--and she did. IB pa^Ge^. James Shields, late United States Senator from Missouri, died suddenly at Ottumwa, Iowa, on Tues day, where he was visiting relatives at the time. Gen. Shields had the honor of being elected to the United States Senate from three different States, and of serving with distinction in two wars for bis adopted country. * 'It is astriking f^ire#b!<^((IMIef •our dailies toe# In an article on the flow of (Migrants from all parts of theOld World to our shores, amount ing to 9,880,708 from 1789 to 1877, when It calls It "the human Mississippi.*1-- ^j^JB the 33 years ending with 1878, there tyfjr landed at New York 5,732,183, of whom . 85.28 per cent, were Irish, 37.96 Ger- 5 ^ man. and 26.76 from other nations. One 'alarming feature of this last item is that the "Heathen Chinee" portion is S5-I000 of 1 per cent.! What it has been in the whole couutry we have not the sialics; but, really; are not Kearney ai«pai8 falMhv-coontrymen, who igure wpfirer a third of the aliens who have fonnd here an opeti d#or» un duly aJarmed as well as selfishly mean in their efforts to esclude and expel "f^those seeking that same door, whose if rights here are as goodartheirs tf-V 7^. One result of th»humiliating1 e^- Hence through which 0«$ftwmia is >d to pass imay tie j»alufc|||Mf it breaks down the land monopoly which has been such a*drawback to its pros perity. Of its 50,000,000 cultivatable acres not over 6,000,000 are enclosed. The great portion Is held by specula- tori and real estate rings. How greatly would the amazing agricultural re sources of that State be developed, if the land could be divided into farms of moderate size, held by thrifty and in dustrious owners. Southern papers too are advocating the idea of small farms in that portion. The New Orleans Timet commend the example of the owners of a tract of 4,000 acres near Dallas in Texas, who divided it into farms of forty and sixty acres' each of which had its neat cottage, was sup plied with stock and impliments, and rented to desirable tenants. As the result the owners are wealthy and the teipfcta happy and prosperous. ALCONOUIN. ( The deep "boom" of a cannon about noon of the 90th reminded - those who had forgotten it that Decoration day had «rrivdd. Tht^pss quickly followed by a shot for eaeh one of the nine brave and loyal ones who lie quietly in our cemetery. About 8 o'clock p.m. people began to arrlte tnall directions and soon the largest gathering Wau conda has ev.?r known on Decoration (lay had assembled in and about the Academy grounds. Forming here in line and headed by the Band the pro cession marched to the cemetery. The report of eitanon, the muffled drums, the solemn music and the marching throng afforded a sight well worth see ing. Arriving at the grounds the usual ceremony of decorating with flowers was proceeded with after whiob an in teresting and timely address b> Rev. Mr. Mountain was delivered, the whole interspersed with appropriate musie by the Band who esoorted the people to academy grounds again, where they, dispursed, feeling, doubtless, a hearty sfttisfaetlon in having assisted in dis charging a sadly pleasant duly. The Hall storm, with thunder and lightning accompaniment, which visi ted us last Friday evening was followed Saturday morniug by an exfessively warm spellvlasting until about 3 p. M. when a oold rain storm from the North came suddenly upon us, banging doors, suggesting flres and causing the thin apparel to be changed for the cast off winter garments with ludicrous haste. Owing to the storm, the meeting called to arrange fur a Fourth of July celebration was but a small one. The few present concluded to adjourn until Drat of this week.
