kThe Yellow Fever at Memphis is still raging, new oases being reported •very day. although the number of deaths Is not as large In proportion as last year. People are leaving the city as fast as they can get away and all kinds of business Is entirely suspended. Where it will end no one can tell. , '. Senator Lamar has returned . ' AH Washington, and says tlie negro ex- 4 Odns fever instead of dying out in i Mississippi is increasing. It is in or- Sftfe der to inquire how far Mr Lamar ex- fv•lied himself in Congress to make the • y' condition of the negro in his State bet- I•!", and prevent outrages from which V/' Macks flee as from a pestilence. . ; ' ••©"The Chicago Times has been * MMtking an extended review of the wheat crop prospects for 1879, and it finds that the condition on J[une 1st is represented by 99 as compared with , 100 laafc year at the same date, or a probable crop of 390,000.000 bushels as compared with 425,000,000 bushels of |Mt year. This will give us an export •orplus of 106,000,000 of last year's crop. Last year the yield was eight and one- half percent, above the average for the preceding six yean. This year the felling off is fifteen per cent, from last year, or six and one-halt' per cent, be- kw the average of the past six years. I f-S1 IP :T\f • ,y, '. £v#v* ; tSTWhen Charles Sumner made a ipMoh in the senate that no southern democrat could answer, Brooks of Smith Carolina, assaulted him with a fltab, and received the thanks of his •oustituents for so doing. When sen ator Conkling made a crashing arraign- HMnt of the democratic party in the fltetoate, in connection with the army Mil, which no democratic senator eould answer, Lamar of Miss., Indulg ed in an unwarranted and vulgar In sult toward him, and his colleagues ••ngratnlated him. It is history re futing Itself except in the respect that Lamar dare not main a personal •fcault upon Conkllng. MFThe leading German papers are ; discussing the growing estrangement be tween Russia and Germany. Less pas- slon {§ shown than has recently been displayed in the press of St. Peters burg and Moscow, but no attempt is •lade to disguise the fact that the situation is very grave and menacing ' to the peace of £urope. It is hinted fhfti the relationship and personal friendship existing between the Caar Alexander and the Emperor William have alone prevented still more serious and Immediate complications. This Ineveases the delicacy with which the iahjeet Is discussed, but there can be . no donbt that the mutual and long •tending animosity of the success of the two nations is rapidly becoming marked than ever. MFThe "don't know it was loaded" gtofle are a type. Chastlne Cox, the Murderer of Mrs. Hull, in New York, is «MM.of them. Probably no one was «« convicted of manslaughter, in Mjr degree, from the reckless hand ling of firearms, who did not earnestly •short Ms fellow men to beware of firearms, not to point pistols at folks, •ot to meddle with triggers, etc., and' no criminal ever opened his lips tor a "dying speech.and confession" without patting in a little sermon about "bad company,*' drink, churchgoing, and all that. Yet the large percentage of the haman race wfio belong to this type go oo handling firearms carelessly, and. {patting themselves in the,way of bad , tnfilueires, until tbe incventable result bring? forth the equally predestined •aution to others. Bafcthe earth keeps on turning around, aPji its "didn't know it was loaded" -tippkltants keep on swinging in the cjprle ot' the willful course. Is tills k'purts cuNsediipHp," or is I it a fatality Inherent iu humau nature ? ' A,' Hk WOODSTOCK. JEnrroitPLAINHKALF.R Judge Smith roturned frora lils eastern trip look- the very picture of health and hap- lilness, and to-day the County Court convenes. Judge Murphy has opened a law of- £ee hew in partnership With his sou, jBdwin D. That the new firm will get a full share of the legal business we not doubt, but the members are so well known and appreciated that a puff" from us is unnecessary. During the past week some * very necessary work has been done on or In the Court House. The plaster over* head In several rooms has had the ugly habit of falling ofl in patches, and it is now,re placed with substantial cciling, we think a great Improvement. The rooms thns improved are those occu pied by the County and Circuit Clerks, Supervisors, Grand and Petit Juries.-- The work was finished on Saturday, but too late to enable us to get a state ment of the cost. The Supervisors met last Monday, land finished their laborst Wednesday. Not knowing how extensively the pro- edings will bo published we have lit- [tie to say. We hear some complaint at heir alleged action in providing for ublication in but one county paper.-- [But we will not indulge in comments ntil we know more of the merits of ,the case, ' The reoordk ^f births in McHenry unty, for the year 1878, kept as now provided by law in the office -of the County Clerk, furnishes the following statistics: No. of births, 377; males, 196; females, 181. The reported na tionality of parents Is as follows: American. 202, British North Ameri can,4; English 10; Irish 32; Scotch 4; .German 43; French 4; no nationality reported 72. The Sandwich RreePre$8speaks very highly of Prof. Bourne, the new Prin cipal of our school, lie has been the Principal of the Public School in Sand wich the last six years, which fact Is of itself a good recommendation. Our school is justly our pride, and we be speak for the new man coming to as sume his place at its head, and his tried and faithful assistants, the hearty sup port of the entire community. The following named gentlemen compose the Board of Education: M. D, Hoy, J.J. Murphy, J. C. Choate, E. E. Rich ards. R. Deisel, J. A. Parish. Pev. S. D. McEwen's health is so much improved that he filled his pul pit again last Sunday, though with some difficulty. He seems much weak ened aud reduced by h'is sickness. Sunday at 6:30 p as per announce ment, there was a Grand Temperance Rally in the Park. The attendance was good, but we could pot stay to lis. ten to the speeches. We believe It is the intention of our temperance work*- ers to hold a series of such out-door meetings. The plan has one thing to recommend it, A great many will at tend t' ~ open *ir gatherings that never #" %l»d the temperance meetings in the uhnrches. A glance of tbe eye over the audience present Sunday eve ning would have couvinoed any one of that fact. ~,y A word about the crops. So far as we have had opportunity for observa tion we report: Wheat is poor, short and badly damaged by oliiutz bugs; many pieces not worth harvesting.-- The Oat crop is generally very prom ising. The same of Corn, with occa sionally a weedy field. Grass is unex pectedly good, and is being gathered iu splendid condition. Potatoes never looked better. Cucumbers look now as though many a back would ache soon in gathering them. The old crop in our Factory will all be gone before the new crop comes in. So far the season's prospects in this vicinity, as a whole, are good* and the farmers/and all de pendent upon them, have abundant cause to be thankful. Just now our Mineral Spring is the subject of much conversation. The wa ter has been analyzed by Prof. Walter W. Haines, of Bush Medical College, Chicago, and the published result is most gratifying to our people. It is now an established fact that the water of our Spring is rich in medicinal qual ities, much superior to many that have acquired great reputation thiough ju dicious advertising.. Our people will now take the neces3arv steps to make the merits of our mineral spring exten sively known, and soon envelopes bear ing a cut of the spring house, a report of the auaiysis, etc., etc., will spread the information far and wide, and the invitation tocomc and drink without money and without price, at least so far as the water U concerned. Why cannot tbe Sentinel express an opinion of its own instead of copying from other papers, whenever possible, a covert sneer at the worthy man who now so faithfully and ably represents the 4th District in Congress? Mr. Sherwin is a stranger to us. We have seen aud heard him just once. We watched as well as we could his course in the extra session of Congress, and read with pleased surprise the speech he delivered on the questions at issue. That speech settled the question as to his ability, and showed that the ban ner district was fully represented.-- The confidence reposed in him by the people of his own county, who know hem best speaks well for his integrity, and his whole course since his nouiina- ation has tended to convince the peo ple of this county at least that he is a man worthy to be trusted. If his future course shall fill the expectations based in the past, and our judgment is not at fault, nextyear the people will let him know that he is still wanted in Congress , whatever scheming and am bitious politicians may say or do. And if we judge the man right, it is our opinion that he would prefer to retire to private lile rather than go to Con gress as the tool or slave of designing men who make politics a profession for purely selfish ends. That is our view of the case, and if correct we want him, and many moifet such, in places of iuiporuut trust. WAUCONDA. „ EDITOR RI. AINDKAJ.HRMr. Pratt has sold his bi^grey lorje, Chicago parties are the lucky buyers. Frank Harrison, Mr. Robert Iiarfi- son's son burned his face quite severely while playing with powder on Ftiday evening last. Fortunately his injuries will not prove lasting, thougl the lesson will. His eyelashes and eyebrows were burned ofl and hij» face badly blistered and his hair singed somewhat, but his eyesight Is n^fftm-' paired and he will not be disfigured. Upwards of 60 people gathered In and about the' Engine Room at the Mill on Saturday, morning to witness the starting of the new Corliss Engine. They were a jolly crowd and full of ad miration for the beautiful machine. Steam was turned into the "thing um bobber" at just 10,15 and "th'b old thing" worked to perfection. Mr. Mile Wynkoof, who was laid up for several days last week on account of a little matinee with a kicking horse, is about again, only a trifle lame. A Dance was held in the upper room of Mr. Thomas1 new shop last Satur day evening. About thirty couples were in attendance and had a jolly time un til 12 o'clock. The Messrs Griswold furnished the music and Mr. "Sid" Powers called and managed. Mrs. SwiniBon, who has been very sick for a number of days is improving. A party of young men chartered the Barge last Sunday mooting and went out for a swim. An opm*a glass ena bled us to see some fine diving from off the upper deck. Those who enjoy a good bath and swim deep water should be on hand next Sunday morn ing. It's well worth ten cents. Those "Barge Club" cigars at the Drugstore are now thoroughly season ed, hence better than ever. Lovers of a fine smoke should not fail to try these goods. * Mr. Ed. Fletcher had gone to Minne sota for a few weeks. See us Grow I--"us^ means Waucon- da. And now comes a well founded rumor that another Harness shop is to be established in Wauconda night away.
