Edward Telle and Eliza Stiiftfi, teachera In a Chicago grammar achool, have been lined #10 and 93 reapect- Ivelf for brutally beating apapll. The XeHenrjr County Teacher* Asso ciation -*111 have no meeting until fall, when due notice will be given. Most of the male teachers are employed at some thing elite during the Summer, and there Is not professional interest enough among the ladjr teachers to ••ven attend and take part duriwr the Vf Inter season, much less to sustain meetings during the Summer. The dasses ip Yale College are di vided in four divisions according to scholarship, and the statistics in re gard to the use of tobacco In the Junior dass were recently taken. Of twenty- Fix In the lowest division, all but four smoked; of twenty seven in the third division, all but seven smoked; of thirty-seven in the second, eight een smoked :ef forty in the first, only ten smoked. Whether this results trom the fact that those who smoke do not like to study, or that those who study do not like to smoke, is not en tirely clear; but the effect of smoking' on German scholarship is not usually regarded as so marked as this. The JtoxtfTof Education of Chicago have decided that corporal punish ment shall be abolished in the public schools. The excuse for this action on the part of the Board is "that it some times happens that teachers are unnec essarily severe." Exceptional cases of this kind have occurred and will occur where such punishments are al lowed, but it seems unwise to say that a system that is in use in the best of schools and with the best of results shall be abolished simply because there la a possibility that it will be abused. The law does not favor teachers but imposes a line or imprisonment for cruelty. Of course, pupi Is who do not behave may be expelled, but that does not help his ignorance--only give him an excuse for it. The schools are made for all, and the laws should com pel their attendance and obedience to the regulations. A petrified Indian has turned up--or rather has been turned up--near what Is known as the Shell Bank, on the Eastern Branch near Bladensburg, Maryland. He is said to be six feet aod three Inches long, and to be broad in proportion. His chest, arms and legs are described as magnificent in 'shape and perfect In preservation. The right hand grasps a tomahawk, and there is what is supposed to be a bullet-hole near the right eye. The body weighs almost exactly a ton, or 9000 pounds, and the features are as serted to express the death agony in a surprising and agreeable manner. The discovery was made by two persons who were digging a trench; and those persons, Messrs. I. L. Hampton, and 8. B. Walker, announce tbeff intent to •Her their prlae as a gift to the United States Government. From recently printed returns tt ap pears that the school libraries of France have, during the last ten years, Increased in a remarkable manner established originally for the pupils in the schools these libraries havftrbeen made use of more and more by the parents and friends of the scholars, and have now become really people's library aupported by the State, which contrib utes 120.000 francs a year for the pur chase of books and by the municipalities In 1866 there were 4,836 of these libra ries ; but by 1877 the number had in creased to 17,76?. During the same period the number of books rose from 1M,153 to 1,716,000.
