ON Saturaday last Constable mau received a dispatch from Marshal Powers, of Elgin, in relation to one Frank Sexton, who had left Elgin the night before for tills place, and was supposed to have stolen a Gold Watch and twenty-five dollars iu mouey. An answer being returned that be Wat here, Marshal Powers started at once for this place. In the meantime sex ton, togetlver with au accomplice by the nahie of Robt. Hi lies, also of Elgin, had disposed of the Watch to O. W. Owen, of this village, and were having a high old lark, taking the ten o'clock boat for the Picnic at Mlddendorft's Grove, Fox Lake. Marshal Powers ar rived about noon and was immedia tely driven to Fox Lake by Constable Wiglitman, where the gay and festive youths were captured, put iu irons aud brought to this place by the evening boat. About 820 of the money was foncd upon their persons, the balance' probably having been squandered dur ing the day. They were taken to El gin on Saturday evening, where anex- aininatlon was held, and they were bound over iu the sum of $300 each to appear at the next term of the Circuit Court. They will undoubtedly go,t a term in Jollet. AN individual made his appearance in this village about ten days since, and in getting himself Into the good graces of our citizens, represented him self to be a Detective belonging to Pinkertou's force, Thompson by name, and that lie was here for the purpose of capturing a notorious horse thief who was suspected to be in tlifs vicini ty. This open pretense of being a Detective ought to havo been enough to condemn him as a fraud, as this class of persons are not xpt to Set their calling be known so uasily.but it seems In this case he found several who were willing to he gulled. He stopped at the Parker House, and getting a team from the Livery there started out to hunt for his Imaginary thief. But when he returned it was a sorry tale he hail to tell. The buggy was all smashed to pieces and the harness badly demoralized, and this was the story he t$ld: He had captured his thief, and handcuffed liim, when the ferocious monster turnod upon him, knocked liim down and made his es cape. During the melee the horses took fright and ran away, doing the damage before mentioned. But as near as we can learn the facts of the case are these: He is no detective at all but a dead beat of the first water, aud was here for altogether a different purpose than that named. It was while sneaking around a place he dare not go openly that Hie team ran away doing the damage above stated. He of course was ready to pay all dama ges, &u., but not having the where withal, that, together with his board, remains unsettled yet. On Tuesday the landlords at the Parker House con cluded that forbearance had ceased to be a virtue, consequently canst;d his arrest, and he now languishes iu Wood stock jail. That he Is a dead beat of the first water there can he no question His real name is supposed re be Chas 1 Chapman, and lie has figured quite ex tensively of late In the criminal calen dar of Chicago. He is an oily-tongued slick looking rascal, who l* liable to de ceive the unsuspecting. It Is to be hoped that this Is the turning point iu hi« career, and that he will now get his ju«C deserts.
