ORrCKWOOO- Eorroa Pladtdbacer: ' Tour Richmond correspondent Jn his communication of last week, could not more clearly elucidate the sentiment and views of our people here upon tl»$ questions at ls*ue than are set forth therein. Every day develops some new phase In the workings of the political machinery which is being; manipulated by certain professional wire pullers -- political gamblers, in whom the people at large can place but little confidence, owing to their past treacherous history when placed iu po- siti3n« of honor end trust. One feature of the little game being played by these unscrupulous trit'tcsters is. as has^ been stated by your cor respondent. plainly evident and has a twofold . object In making use of the names of B. N. Smith as candidate for Congress. Firstly, the leading ring masters of. this gallant baud ofring- sters*' have not the remotest Idea or desire to place In nomination B. N. Smith as a candidate for election to Congress -- far from it; but to use him as a tool, or stock in trade, with which to assist Ell wood In beati n? Shei*win„ Secondly, to lead Mr. Smith on to p»»- liticai suicide and defeat, a willing dupe to the machinations of certain leaders, who, in the guise of rendering friendly aid and assistance, are plan ning, his destruction and overthrow, and thus eftectu.-illy place him on the shelf to dry out of their way In the fu ture. In regard to Mr. Sherwiu's past record in Congress one thing is a no ticeable fact, that in whatever attempts are made, or whatever means are being used for hi* defeat, his strongest op- posers can *ay naught against his Con gressional career In the past. Nd man has filled the position with more honor, or gained a more permanent influence, than has Mr. Sherwln. The voters of this district cannot sftord .to set Mr. Sherwiu aside, merely to gratify the ambitious aspirations of Mr.Smitli and his friends. McHenry county caunet af ford to allow her Delegation to be thrown Into, the hands of a lew design ing tricksters, to be gambled and bart ered away, merely to calry out and gratify their personal schemes of des truction, regardless of the present good or futuie welfare of the country. Time and space will not permit further com ment. nor Is It necessary. Your cor respondent referred to has treated the matter fairly and honestly, and has plainly expressed the sentiment and feelings of the majority of the voters of the county. Mr. Smith and the ring masters who have him Iu charge have openly made their boa«ts that they would control anil carry the vots of the town of Greenwood, at all hszards, as he belongs to that town and owns a part of it. This sounds well to talk, btit time will decide this point,"lien." to four satisfaction. The voters of TnTt you are In baa company. Two men by the name of McNeil.and McGavitt, from Big Hollow, came into town on Monday, and after filling up with benzine, and insulting one of our citizens, started for home. When near Wheeler's,wood's, on the east side of the river, they in home manner suc ceeded in running Qieir team through a barb wire fence and against a tree, killing one of the horses almost In stantly. Jnst how it was done we did not learn, but that it was a cruel and beutisiji piece of business we thluk there is imoloubt. • . R„ attended divine service at the Baptist Church, this ct*,y, on Sahbath morning last. The Rev. J. 1). McLean preached an able and el oquent discourse suitable to the oc casion, It buiug two days before Dec oration l;ay, and services were held in commemoration of such. The house was crowded, many old veteraiui being seen In the audience. Co. G was pres ent, also a large squad of the G. A. R. boys In command of Capt. Kelley. We would that every Re publican voter in McHenry County could see and read the article that appeared In the Richmond Department of this palter last week* treating upon the political situation as seen by Dr. fl. F. Bennett. The Doctor has got the Whole thing in a nutshell, so to speak, and states the outlook In a clear, con cise, candid and convincing manner. A few such articles (however they are few and far between who can write «ueh so forcibly) would remove the J** tfcfUW? Jht lewJ»lIo^,er! of B. !f. Smith--of course excepting the Sontliworthglennon concern and their two or three co-laborers. We were not at all surprised to bear that Our brother- correspondent. Dr. S. F. Bennett, had received an Invita tion to read an original poem at Mar- shalltown, Iowa, on Decoration Day, and we are sure that the Doctor's ac ceptance will Insure to the good peo ple of Marshalltown and vicinity some tiling well worth listening to. for Dr. Bennett's whole soul Is in sym pathy with Everything pertaining to both the living and the dead ex-Union seidlei.'and we have no doubt bnt that this will be one of bis grandest and most noble efforts In this line. The trial of the Caseys for the mui> der of Mike Lawler Is new going on In the Circuit Court. Out of about one hundred men brought from ail parts of the county, a jury of twelve good and true men ate re selected, satisfactory to both the prosecution and defendants. At this writing the evidence Is about all In, and by the time the PLAIN- DEALER reaches Its readers we expect the eminent counsel on both sides will have had their little sav and the case given to the jury, and likely, flielr de cision rendered. The leading counsel in this case Is, for th« prosecution. States Attorney Cnrtlss. assisted by M. L. Joslyn and B. N.jSmith, and for the defense. Judge T. D. Murphy assisted by E. D. Murphy and Messrs. Bourne & Gllmore. Dr. A. E. He has been sent for the last, two years ssone of their del- egitlfs to the State Society. The Doc- ter w)H probably be gone from ten davs ro two weeks. a« he feels the Society Meeting will be of much ben efit to each member present. Very few physician", as yonng as Dr. Bald win are as hlglilv honored-Pat least abroad--as he seems to be. The action of the Congressional Convention In naming an early day for the Convention In the Fifth Congres sional District lia«created quite a st'r \r. political circles iu this oountv. The movement on the p®rt of disap pointed office seeker* 16 defeat the Hon. J. C, Sherwin for re-nomination, depends lanrely on the success of the candidacy of Judge B. N. Smith In McHenry Co. It will therefore he In teresting to a large number of yonr readers, to know how the political car.lnden with its precious load of political wire manipulators, i* getting along, ft Is a notorlons fact that a large part of the opposition, to Mr. Sherwlii comes from that mysterleu* Woodstock ring. For months this ring, organized and dhtefly directed by and In the sole Interest of the South- worths, has been laving plans whereby it can overrule the well known pref erences of the people.'After bargain ing with Winnebago County, Shi. set ting of that county ont of the district necessitated a change of base so that negotiations were opened between the bosses and DcKalb. and the oppo sition to Sherwin In his own county. It being well known that McHenry County was well satisfied with Mr. Sherwiu's course, some method had> to adopted to secure the county delega tlon against him, and for this purpose Judge B. N. Smith, a well known and reputable lawyer, was Induced to len<* himself. We do not charge Jtfdge Smith with being a party to any cor rupt bargain, bet we are satisfied that he Is being slaughtered In the house of his friends, solely for personal and selfish motives. It Is admitted by hte friends, that he stands net the ghost of a shadow of a chance to be struck by lightning in the District Convention, but to defeat Sherwin is to urge upon the people the courtesy of standing by a home candidate. If the people can In this way have the wool pulled over jtiielr eyes the SoUthworths can secure n delegation to go Into the Conven tien to trade in their Interest. Batln South worth and liis partner held, gov ernment position*, and the other Souihworth (the General of Elmlra fame) is anxious to secure {one. He makes It his boast that he runs the county and carries its vote in his pock et. Iu talking with a party in the last few days, lie was heard to say that he always had things just as he wanted them, and It would he so this time. How near he told the truth remains to he seen. For once the prople seem to be aroused and seem determined to set down on this set of shameless po litical brokers, and to endeavor to re gain'the good name and reputation of their county, which is known oil all sides as the county that Is for barter and sale. Shcrwtn's friends are the clasg of men that stick and propose to fight every Inch of contested ground.
