We made a Tlsit on Saturday last to the new Johnshurgh Butter and Cheese Factory, built the past spring by Bu chanan & Moody, and can truly say that it is one of the finest arrange*] and best conducted Factories in this section of the country. This factory is under the Immediate charge of Mr. E. Buchanan, who is a practical man in the business, having for the past twelve or fifteen years been at the head of some of the best factories in Kane and McHenry counties. The bultding Is 36x48. With a boiler room 14x16. They rim a six, horse power engine. wr|iich is connected with a ten horse power boiler. The water is brought through pipes from a spring just across the road, the snpply being abundant and of the best quality. This Factory was only started the last of April, and In a section where dairying had been but little looked after before, but at the present time they nre receiving 3000 pounds of milk per day, from which they are making one hundred and ten pounds of butter and four cheese weighing about forty pounds each. Although they had hei^n running but little over a month they paid seventy cents for the month of May. which was fully as much as most of the older factories paid. Their basi ness has bsen constantly increasing and by another year will be seobnd to no factory In this section. Everything In and around the Inst! tutloii is r.eat and In apple-pie order, and the farmers 1» that section have just cau«e to congratulate themselves on being able to seccre so able and effi cient a manager to handle their milk. What shall our future be? is the ouestlon which agitates the nvera)rR mental calibre »f Woodstock nt the pretient time. We are rather II spasmodic cominnnltv than other wise. At times our s)ta»ms result in affirma. tive and sometimes in negative improvement. A little more than a year ago we took the initiatory step in hign license, which ie now the law of onr noble State, with the e\c«p. tion, however, that the license ordinance -of Woodstock makes a cleaner sweep than the 5tate law, Itv covering the whole ground without splitting peas, nnd herein is to the ordinarv temperate thinker the more satisfltc. torv. thl« step was considered by our elt. ize'ns accidental and SfltMtodic in'its incip. iency, but it is now looked unon as a fixed fact," and that in th" fntnre, Sftic is the mini- imum c.ouHiderition ot the saloonist's license. The OitUens' I.eague is a new feature among ns, end, properly managed, may Im made fruitful in goo<t results, but, if made an en. gine of partiality against certain species of law breaking lind passing others equally detrimental to the advancement of moral*. It will lose its opportunity to accomplish its oh. ject, and, like preceding organization* Air moral advancement, will tlnd it necessary to don a new attire. Law breaking of every kind is too populti"among those who have tho controlling power, and if an organization can so work ns to aid in bringing about a reform in this resi»eet, a great good will be oecoin. plithed No real r<-form will lie lasting that comes short of educating tl* young under home influence; to admire the rieht and des- plsee wrong hv whomsoever practiced, by hlirh or low, rich or poor. Any reformation, sought on a narrowei basis, will lie a deform ity and very unsatisfactory to the real re. former. Another t!»atnre of genninn reformation is embracing the oppoitunity given IIB under onr new road law, which places the wan a re. ment of our highways in the hands of the highway commissioners. An4 anyone who doubts the wisdom of this law, lias but to mike a few comparisons, For example, take Chemung street from Woolatoek to Smith's corners. Call to mind its impassibility tt few years ago under the old pathmastors system and travel over It n'»w. And so too the Mnveniro road, tho road to Waterman's. Also east by tlie hair Grounds, nnd in fact every avenue bears overwhelming testimony in favor ot tho new system, fn this, Woodstock Is a pioneer, for to the citizens ot WJoodirock is the credit largely due of putting the wheel in motion which has worked out the problem of road making with so much siicc08», which simplv consists In throwing up your highways sbova the water level, keeping the road lied well drained, and when so prepared, plnoing thoreon a Itodv ot gravol, not saud, sulUcieut v,o hold vour loaded wagons, nnd when once thoroughly done, it Is a perfect roac for years. The drainage law, too, is soon to add untold wealth to our State. In this, nlso, Dorr is taking the lead, nnd, ere wintor shall have closed in upon us, a line of ditnv flve milos in length will have been completed that will re claim hundreds of acres. And we belteye this will be a sanitary as well as an agrieul. tural reform. Rut tne all absorbing topic just now Is that "burning well" st Waterman's eheeae fae, torv. Burning with a brilliant, flume, and lielcbing forth snn>l, gr-ivel and water alter, uately, are some of it« freaks. It it claimed to lie down a bond red and seventv.flve feet, and is being visited bv throng* both day and night "And wlvit shall the harvest he?" mnv lie asked with impunity, but who shall answer? Having Is well under wnv, nearly or quite all ta'me hsy being secured, snd harvest Is progressing finely. TIH out, whoat, ryeand bsirlev crops are verv satisfactory. Of the corn crop, well, "we will seo you later and speak of this. When and wher* are the' old settlers to have their le-union? We must not fail to mention our agrlcul. tural fair, as we greatlr desire to see every farmer, mechanic, tradesman, professor, snd everybody else on that occasion.
