A strong contrast is this with j^he conduct of Sullivan, who recently jlgured in a police court as a wife-heat- *r. Waoeonda Depal mt. M^There Is something quite repnf. -Vjpont to our sense of independence in the words "ordered out," *s used by the ?*Kuights «f Labor" In ordering men. engaged for others here and there all ;i*o»er the country, to qnit work. When *.theso Knights of Labor, whU-h we Itn- ..^pir^n* is a misnomer, for we very much ^jidinbt If they labor at all, unless It is « calledlabor to swindle a living out of i-redulous people--we say, when these .Knights of Labor, from their secret 5: ;>lMlWt»et council, '•order" men a hundred : v inllei away* to leave titelr employers* roh a momeiit'e notice, and to rush into 1|%lie street dependent upon chance for ^npport. 'JMO better remedy than V-SP: - g®"*Goveriior Hamilton of Maryland If a ninn who baa tlie courage of his • convictions. In a five-column address to tiie people of the state he arraigns • the democratic party in a manner that ((„ 8 ahows lie is thoroughly conversant witli the aftatrs of the state »nd how bnsl- |n«« has been conducted. He criticises the last three legislatures; shows how •: the Hate has been swindled out of half million dollars, and speaks with bit- ternesa of the democratic ring Chat J^contrttta the party in that state. Hit allegation that since 1879 takes ana %. ! ot|ier state revenues, amounting to ..taindredBof thousands of dollars, have | . not bwn paid over by the collectors* Is well calculated to create a sensation. Delinquent officers now owe the state W1MW. Such a state of a^airs would mot new exist if the democrats had talried out the' pledges mad<v to the people In their platforms: neither •t . . I' 8. W}- i * t t l> U** COIIMT* TRACHKKa umtofe EDITOR PLAIN DEALER:-- The Lake County Teachers Institute convened on .Monday, August 20th, at Waukegan and has been in session flye days In charge of our efficient County Superin tendent. About sixty teachers were present on the first day and the enroll- ̂went now exceeds eighty, with a V prospect of several additions next week. Jjit Superintendent Fisher hasbeen as- ^ listed by several prominent educators 'A- ; during the past week. The principles f •» of Civil Government and Mental Arith- nietlc, are taught by the Superintend- f o,lt in person. Vocal music, Language I>««ons and Grammar are in charge of • , . 1*rof. A. R. Snbln, Principal of Frank. j^s_, lfo School. Chicago, and late Superin- S; tendeni of Public instruction, tn Lake j county. Prof. W. H. Ray, late Super- Intenuent of the Waukegan city school, about an hour each day In teaching and ICustrnting his manner of teaching the history or the United Mates. His lessons are both interest ing and instructive. It |ga subject of ifeep regret to the tea?liers of Lake County that Mr. Page is soon to leave iiafor another and more remunerative field of labor. Written Arithmetic is lo-X'Irtrge of John Fi^lier, principal of th*?Lib*rtyril!e Public School, a very fflk'ient and popular teacher who spends half an hour daily in illustrating hi' method of teachlug that useful M^cnce. Methods of teaching Geography have t'evn -presented by I). L. Moody, E. R. Moore, Miss Nettie Brochou and , successful teachei'3 present, On 1 litirsday Miss Ada Manchester «»ndi»cted an interesting lesson in Physical Exercises and vocal culture. Vu Frlday the subject and metliods of ^aclilng penmanship were freely dis- .cuned by O. M. Samson. Whlgham and other expert* in penmanship. Peter Johnson Is boll ding a stoHr room to tlie rear uf Ills )ttore on th»' groend formerly occupied by Dr. Wells office. • • • A monument to the memory of tlie late A P. Werden has just been erected jn the cemetery. Wm. England has been obliged to abandon th« road for a few days, on account of a huge carbuncle boil, from which he was suffering last week. He it now, however, very much better. Chas. Partridge, of the Waukegan Qatette. wns In town last week. County Treasurer Manser was vlsli* ing Arthur Cooke and other friends. {-: Dr.Jndd a;id wife from Edgertou, Wig., have been visiting with Dr, Mo- Chesnev. Alfred North, who has been teaching In Boone county during the past year, and who is seemingly a young man of universal mechanical ge»ius, has this summer turned his attention to taxid ermy for recreation, though his success may lead him to adopt it in paitt as a profession some time In the future. He has a very fine case of stuffed birds on exhibition at the drug store. The tenth anniversary of Mr. and Hra. Milton Powers1 wedding was very pleasantly celebrated at 4helr residence on Friday afternoon. . C. L. Pr.itt has returned to Ills laud In Dakota. II. D. Wells and others have been .vis iting the DesPlaines camp meeting. Quite a number of our teachers have been in atteiidanca at the teachcrs' in stitute at Waukegan. Mr. Kennedy the new teacher, wis in the village Friday. , The third nine of IWaneo'nda played a match game of ball with McHcnry on the latter, svgiounds on Tuesday, and shall it be said as usual? wlih the Wau* conda boys. They were defeated There is material enough here «or three goo I nines, if ' they have no op portunities to play excepting match games, and they enjoy It, It is all right certainly, but If they haye an Idea of beating anybody they n>ust certainly have organization, system and prac tice, . Tlio brass! band are giving .almost every evening open air concerts from the old hotel balcony. Fiiday a delegation from Wanconda visited Mctfenry to witness the game between McHenry and Barrlngton. A large delegation of Christadelphi- ans from Chicago, Harvard and oilier places have met here and are to-day (Sunday} holding religious services near Mr. North's residence. The Wauconda Sunday school Intends milting with neighboring schools in .a picnic at Diamoud Lake next Saturday Sept. 1st. Medicine was very fairly represented on tlie croquet grounds last week, Drs. Wells, McChesney and Judd being seen there frequently. Esquires Burritt and Bangs represented the lnw, while the-, ology was conspicuous for Its absence-- in fact that is the condition In Wau conda most of the time. Uucle Dan Oakes came near losing a valuable horse the other night, by nn unwise discrimination in supplying its wants; at least that is the theory. Ijt seems the intelligent animal was assist ing during tlie day in grinding apples, and it is probable that it was liquidst* ed with only sweet cider, whenever the other hands had resource to an older prodnct in the cellar. This wrong she detei mined to right, and when tlie Shades of evening deepened, proposed to help herself; accordingly she went to the cellar, aud into the cellar down the open hatchway. Though somewhat injured by her sudden descent, sue con tinued nosing around after cider, mak ing such a racket thereby that Uncle Dan aud the boys were called to her assistance. Instead, however, of giv ing her chler they foolishly took down one side of the cellar wall and lifted her out. Probably they forgot to get some elder for themselves even. It is a pity that the mares enterprise should have been so poorly rewarded. Mr. McAndrews has traded the Jenks mare for Frank Barker's colt. The Weagant family suffered quite severely-from the Rochester cyclone. Their buildings aud crops were totally destroyed. Mrs. Weagant is a daugh ter of Andrew Cook, Esq. Her son Gay land, was visiting here In the ram mer. ASHUAL BS-TOWN Am ficitic. -? ' ' && w- t' AT McHINRY, ILLINOIS, It w ORATORS: : T. r>. MUR-Hr, Of Wood- Stock. HON. IRA R.CURri»,Of M:irew|^ GEO.
