There are not v many one Idea men In McHeory county aa they would like to make peoplr believe, 10-At Belle Plalne, Iowa, an arte- •Ian well burst when at a depth of 180 feet, sending a stream of water high In the air and gradually widening until a terriflo flood poured forth, forming two rivers, which have «nt channels through the town, destroying much property and f ooding much land Every attempt to stop the flow ha? been unsuccessful, as the force Is Irre sistible thus rar. Engineers are en gaged, but It Is thought the best that can be done Is to direct the flow by forming channels so as to damage as title property as possible. l^The Woodstock Sentlnei says: Gr«nr*r'a course la announcing the vote •' the McHenrv Oonntv <1eley*tlon *« nnanl. John Tanner, of Clay oounty, for State Treasurer, and Hon. Richard Edwards, of Bureau county, lor Superintendent of Public Instruc tion. It is a strong ticket. Both can- (Hdates are eminently qualified for their respective positions; so well .qtiallflod that no one will be found to dispute it. Hainos at Ml* Old Tr-loks. The notorious E. M. Haines is at his olJ tricks a<ain, trying to thwart the wishes of the democratic party of this District, and getting by trickery what he cannot get by honest means, His latest dodge is getting up contesting delegations to attend the democratic Senatorial Convention, w&ich he hopes to capture by fair means or foul, and who ever knew E. M, Haines to do anything fair in politics. This is no funeral of oars, but yet *e like to see right prevail, no matter if W3 are not personally Interested,-- Haines, with all his ability Is a nnl- aance in the Legislature and ahould be •at down upon by all political parties. He is too expensive a luxury to send to Springfield. , NtfflOA. . About eleven o'clock the mil itary band, composed of Ma). About •*ne hundred were so registered Mr Ellsworth proposes to have this/eg;'* t.er on the fair ground at Woodstock daring the Fair and especially urge* that all soldiers'of whatever command present at tne fair will register there 19*An earthquake shock was felt Tuesday night at the South and at far north as Danville, Illinois. Charleston, 8. C. was ths greatest sufferer. The principal business portions of the city Were destroyed, not a hundred real* deuces left Intack, and fully two- thirds of them rendered uninhabitable, from fifty to a hundred persons killed and several hundred Injured. Fires broke out, but were soon checked by the department. The estimated loss to property is 15,000,000. The first Shock was at 9:50 in the evening, the next one at 8:35 next morning, Sum- werville, near Charlestoa, was nearly destroyed. Sixteeo distinct shocks were counted at Colun»bia, Brick walls were shaken in Murphysboro, this state, but no damage was done. I^Love laugis at wills as well as locksmiths. Richard Parka, of Phila delpbia. a rich widower, with children grown took for his second wife a young girl who had been a servant in his family. The daughter left the bouse, but the son, Washington stayed at home and was duly respectful to the ftepmother, who was a lew months tounger than he. 1'wo more children were born to Richard and he was gatbered to his fathers, three years ag He left property valued at $126,000, and by will devised It to his widow and her two children. One condition of the will w«a that If the widow married »again she would forfeit alt »!g!il lo the property, which In that ovont would revert to the testator5 aon by his first wife, Washington Parks. Love has outweighed the con ditional gold, Last Friday, Mrs. Parks forfeited her title to the estate by marrying. But ste Is Mrs. Parks still, and in enjoyment of her first husband accumulations. She married tap <p son. who besides getting his fathers fortune and widow, becomes atep father to his own half-brother and half-sister. Remember the fact thar W. pwight will not he mder*old by any house In Woodstock or McHenrf Co, In. Some of the obje ;ts In obtaining his roster of ex-soldiers of this and urrouading Counties are t» the en^ hat we may organise a McHenry Oouaty Veteran Soldier Association, xlso to enable oomrades who are hunting testimony in their pension claim* to find their comrades. And aIBO to preserve for futur* reference When the roster is completed, after he fair the liat will be puollshed In *otne county paper so that all oom rades may have a copy. Comrade* dn not forget to register, when at the Fair. There will be a sign upon the grounds so that you may find tlje place. At 13 o'clock, the business meeting ock place, officers for the ensuing vear were elected, and It was voted t<> nold the Rft-Unton next year at Capron. We then repaired to the Riuk and partook of dinner prepared by the W. R. C. auxtlary to the Ma rengo Post 6. A. R. l o say that the able was bounteously spread only feeblv expresses it. All the delicasler of the season were provided. The fe? for dinner was fifty cents and the Corps must have realized a fine snm. After dinner the veterans fell Into Hue a company commander took the names of all veterans present and collected their dues, We then marched to the Park where We listened to some stirring speeches. Mrs. Ira Curtis. o» the W. R. C. wife of oar State Senator delivered a very fine address, and we thought perhaps if Ira should need help he bad it near at home. Mrs. Dr. Green, wife of the Surgeon of oor ~mm ap xiea iii yet with us gave us tier recollections oi that campaign when she was "under fire" with the boys on several oc casions. Several comrades were called out forf speeches. Finally Capt. John Eddy, of Company E., was called for and made one of his characterlstir red hot speeches at the close calliug upon the boys to sing "we will rally round the flag boys Ac" when be waved his arms and shouted Glory! Hallelujah, and left the stand. Lieut. M F. Ellsworth was then called for and had just commenced to speak when a commotion was noticed in the crowd near ths platform. It was an nounced that Captain Eddy had fainted, when comrade Ellworth ceased his remarks and the crowd swayed to and fro. Almost Immedi ately Dr. Green, who was nooa by his side, announced that Capt. Eddy wa» dead. Gloom settled over the vast crowd and It was thought that bl» heart broken wife would follow him then and there. How sad yet how glorious a death. Captain Eddy was a Christian and was prepared to go and his death on such an occasion, surrounded with his comrades in afms and just at the close of a most eloquent tribute to the private soldier. It seemed like being shot down in a sccessful assault upon the enemies works. He will be hurried at Marengo on Tuesday at 3 oidovk p, k, by the Grand Army of the Republic, of which he waa an honored member. We think this is the first commissioned officer of ths 95th that has died In this county since the war. Captain Eddy is well known throughout this county. He was once Sheriff of this county some years since. Peace to his anhes and glory to his soul. His heart broken wife and family have tbn heart felt sympathy of a host of ex-soldiers, as also many other frieods. PUBLIC AUCTION.
