The roads have been good and the weather fine, and people have flooked In from far and near to stock up with holiday goods. The PLAIN DEALER circulates widely, and Its advertisers get the benefit of Its columns by telling Its readers what they have to sell. It Is under obligations to the business men (or their liberal patron age, and is glad to know that people rely on its eolumns for good goods at low prices. How much more different Is the life of the professional man or merchant to that of the farmer boy. We could not all be boys and all boys could not bs farmers. Blessed Indeed, is the lot of the boy who is a farmer, untrameled •by ambition, holding sweet commun ion with nature the year round--we can but envy the farmer* Thus, be tolls, but when night comes he sleeps without harrassing cares or annoyan ces of the morrow. Tour correspondent of northern Nunda stated, among otb> er things, that a certain Bolger had returned from St. Paul, and that he (Bolger) said, that in order to keep warm in this country a person would have.to wear about 14 overcoats. Now Mr. Bolger may cougratulate himself on leaving Minnesota when he did, for If he were up here now, he would cer tainly have to wear 24 overcoats. Bol° ger's blood must be very thin, to speak of cold In the way he did. Yesterday was the first cold day we have had this winter; well it Is not thawing very mush to*day. for I regret to say that up here it doea not thaw a particle while the meroury playfe between SO and 40 below aero. But all jokes aside we have bad no very cold weather un> til yesterday, and I have since the eighth of November, walked three miles every morning and evening (to and from my work) and carried my overcoat just one day, and have not quite got to be an Esquimaux either. Winter did set in rather early. We bad the first snow storm the 17th of November, and have . had a splendid run of sleighing ever since. But take It all In all I think Minnesota's winter is quite as agreeable as that of Illinois, because there are not so many, nor such sudden chsnges, and consequently people are not so apt to take colds. I am 103 miles northwest of St. Paul. This is not near as fine a oountry as northern Illinois, for of all the oonotry 1 have seen yet, northern Illinois takes the ioake, though this Is a very good farming country and can oompete with most any country in raising wheat, oats, barley or potatoes. Corn of course Is not a sure crop, though we had a splendid crop of corn this year. I was foreman on a farm here the past three seasons, which averaged 98} bu. wheat and 63 bu. oat* per acre last year, and 33} bo. wheat and 81 bu. oats per acre this year, I. e. machine m«a§° ure. We get very near as much for farm products here, as farmers do the same distance from Chicago, dairy products excepted. No. 1 bard wheat brings 68 cents to*day. The PLAINDEALER IS a welcome visi tor and Is perused with great Interest as soon as It Is banded to me. We hear of two family trees, one at W. O. Bough ten's and another at the resi dence of G. B. Stone, Christmas day, nearly every family either gave a dinner or were Invited to partake of such with their friends, and merry sleighing parties might be seen going in evtory direction. In the village, all was quiet and peaceful, the greatest excitement being In tbe morning when a number of the citizens and others who hap^iened to be In town formed a league of good fellowship and visited each place of business With a HMerry Christmas" for the pro* prletor, who (four out of five) re* •ponded <t>y passing the cigars to the joUy cfwod.
