From Oshkosh, Wisconsin, comes a terrible tale of man's cruelty I About two years ago Peter Van Hoff marrried a young lady of Oshkosh. Soon aftter the marriage he began to drink heavily and make his young wife miserable, though she tried hard to reform him. Immediately after the birth of a daugh­ ter the husband left the city and has since remained away. Mrs. Van Hoff took in washing, and until rheumatism compelled her to re­ main idle, supported herself and child. Humane Agent %ilkie was informed Mrs Van Hoff was ill and destitute; he went at once to investigate. As he opened the door the child, seated in its cradle, laughed with pleasure at his com­ ing, but continually called "Mamma!" He had heard this same call as he ap­ proached the house, 'and thinking the mother somewhere about stepped into a back room to find her. On a couch covered with a sheet, he saw a woman's form. Lifting it he saw Mrs. Van Hoff's paleface. She was dead. Days of long suffering had left her but a skeleton; and the features, rigid in death, to'd a pa­ thetic story ot desertion.
