BEATTY, the progressive and alert editor of the Nunda Herald, offers the following suggestions to nnheard-of political office seekers, which hits the nail squarely on the head: "Now is the time when the country newspapers men are receiving letters from men they do not know, and possibly never heard of, staling the writer is a candidate for some htate office and any aid the editor can bestow will be greatly appreciated. Yes, no doubt it wonld On the other hand, any aid these politicians can be stow the editor to recompense him for the space nsed in his paper would be appreciated. If politicians want to ad vertise their business why don't they . include a check as evidnce of good faith for the amount of advertising they de sire, and send stlorig copy, properly sign ed, foi jrtising? Talk about busi ness. If there is any business in a news paper man giving away his space any more than a merchant giving away his goods, we are unable to see where it comesin. " THE Woodstock Sentinel, the leading Republican newspaper of McHenry county, gives L. E. Mentch of Cary, candidate for senator from this district, the following strong endorsement. Not v'oalv rbe Sentinal. but every newspaper in Mctienry county has, we believe, en dorsed Mr. Mentch's candidacy. Here is what the Sentinel says: Mr. Mentch is receiving much en couragement in his candidacy for the rotate senatorship He has made a pre liminary canvass of McHenry county, viand is receiving promises of support in all parts of the county. His many- years of activity in affairs of the county, especially as supervisor and a member of the board of review, have extended h his acquaintanceship in every direction. Mr. Mentch is progressive and capa ble. He is public spirited and believes ,that this is an age of impiovement. On the board of supervisors he is chair man of the committee on buildings and grounds. In this position he had direct charge of the extensive improvements • which have been made on the court house during the past three years. Ev ery person who is familiar with these improvements knows that they were well done, and that Supervisor Mentch is entitled to much of the credit for their execution. The board of review is never consid ered a popular public institution, but as its chairman for several years Mr. Mentch conducted matters with such discretion and impartiality as to main tain the respect of all. probably would not for many yeart to -come should Mr, Hopkins be defeated. We cannot understand how Any per son or newspaper living in or published in Aurora can feel otherwise. Mr. Hop kins came to Aurora many years ago, a young man, and by industry and per severance has attained an enviable po rtion not only as a citizen but in the political world as one of the two senate ors that represent Illinois in the senate of the United States. His position in the senate reflects credit upon Aurora, and the people of Aurora take an honest pride in the advancement that he has made. For some reason that seems to be per sonal to himself, Mr. Copley, the owner of the Beacon, has developed a spite Hj^ainst the senator, and for some time now he has had daily publications in the Beacon against the senator, as reck less as they are senseless. If the proprietor of the Beacon is am bition? for political promotion, as his friends claim him to be, the Daily News advises him that no man has yet sUc- eeded politically by attempting wan tonly to destroy another. Mr. Copley is not advancing his interests by at tempting to injure these of Senator Hopkins. Whether the Beacon's opposition be personal of brought- about thrti the political ambition of the proprietor of that paper, is of little moment. The childish exhibitions of hostility as ap pear in the columns of the Beacon have become nauseating. It does not and cannot injure Senator Hopkins with the people of Aurora and Kane county, who have known him for nearly thirty years, during which period he served eighteen years as a member of the house of rep resentatives from this district and now has served four years in the senate. He is regarded as one of the ablest debaters in the senate and has been re peatedly congratulated and compli mented by President Roosevelt for his service in legislation in which the ad- mi tfietration was greatly interested. That he will be re elected to the senate when his present term expires is con ceded by all Republicans in the state who are in the least familiar with polit ical conditions. The people of Aurora are interested in his success and in having the honor of being the home of one of the two men in Xlliifois who represent five mill ions of people in the Senate, of the Unit ed States. We predict that when pri mary day comes the Beacon will see that its efforts have been futile and that the Republicans of Aurora and Kane county will be as loyal to Senator Hop-' kins as they have been in the past. The Daily News has no direct polit ical or other concern in Senator Hop kins' welfare, but believes that hife re election is called for in the best inter ests of Aurora, Kane county and the state of Illinois at large. W. V- I AS TO SENATOR HOPKINS. Aurora Daily News: The Daily News has not been a blind follower of Senat or Hopkins in the past, as readers of this paper know, and will not be in the future. It, however, recognizes his ability, worth and standing in the sen ate of the United States and, in the in terests of Aurora at large, will be glad to see him returned to the senate when his present term expires. Aurora never before has enjoyed a -direct representa tive in the Upited States senate and Indigestion Stomach trouble is but a symptom of, and not |Q itMlf a true disease. We think of Dyspepsia. Being shown that article and informed that the price was $1.15, he said, "Ob, I can get the same kind of an axe from a Chicago mail order bouse for 90 cents." "Very well," said the dealer, "I'll give it to you at the same price, provided you will do the same with me as you would with ^heni." "All right," replied the customer, as he handed over a dollar bill, the dealer giving back ltf cents in change. ' 'Now," said the dealer, "I want 25 cents more to pay the express charges," which the purchaser gave him. " How much did your axe cost you?" "$1.15," answered the man. "Very good. Now give me 5 cents more for uionpy order fees and postage," which the purchaser had to hand over, "Now how much did your axe cost you?" "$1.20." "Not so cheap after all," said the dealer, where upon he tossed the axe upon the shelf and told the customer to call for it in ten days, as that would be as soon as he could get it if he ordered it from the retail catalogue hon&e.
