Miller) The McHenry girls baseball team, now called the Mil-Redst won two' games and I6st one 'during the past week. Wednesday night the Fox River Grove Pirettes dropped an 11 t^ 0 contest to our team. The Mil-Reds played as nearly a perfect game as can be hoped for. Each team made only three errors, but otir girls outhit the Pirettes 16 to 6. Three base hits were made by Evelyn Anderson, Audrey Rothermel and Arline Amundsen; two base hits by Louise Stilling, Evelyn Anderson, Marion Anderson, pitcher, Betty Hendricks, Audrey Rothermel, and Rosemary Hetterman. Friday night the Woodstock high school girls offerted no opposition at all, and our teajn checked up a 23 to 3 victory. The Woodstock Yellow Jackets came to town Monday night, and with the aid of fourteen errors by the Mil- Reds, returned home with a 13 to 9 victory. Our team out-hit the visitors 10 to 7, and a good solid blow with the bases loaded in the last inning could have pulled the game out of the fire. Harold Taxman won the junior singles tennis championship by. defeating Francis Cox in the finals. Adele Froehlich and Arelerv Bacon are the doubles champions by virtue of their victories over Cletus Althoff and Ruth Michels, Mary Althpff and the writer, and finally George John* son and Charles Vycital. BACON'S STRIP 1 UZEKE** BACON McHenry clinched the championship of the Northern < Illinois District of the Natiojjial Softball Association by taking the last home f^ame from Harvard, 2-1. It was a well played contest throughout with Pflug allowing but five hits which is just five more than that same team got off him the last time they booked up. McHENRY CINCHES TITLE NIPPING HARVARD 2 -1 Faced with the task of winning one of their two remaining league games against Harvard and Marengo, the McHenry Softballers went to work and decided the' issue at once by taking Harvard in a well-plajfe<l contest, 2-1. One of the largest crowds of recent weeks was on hand to watch Pflug and the McHenry boys'cinch ^the title of charwpions for this district. Manager Nick Miller is awaiting information as to where the team will now go to play for their sectional title in an effort'to work up further in the quest for the National Softball title. Harvard could gather but five hits Off Pflug and only one of them figured in the scoring and McHenry held a slim lead of 2-0 at the time. Two more hits in the ninth didn't make things look any too promising, but the Strain boys popped to Bohr and Seibel fanned to extricate McHenry from their most perilous position. Fay and Hup Smith were the hitting stars for McHenry and it was Hup*s single to start the third that produced the first run. Gus Freund safe On an error, but Downs' hit scored Smith with the first run of the game 'and Gua was out at the plate Harold Freund also hit, but Schjreiner, Pfltyig and Bohr, all hitless during the Srnftie, furnished the next three outs without further ado. , ' . ' Schreiner's "base running provided the next run without the aid of a hit Downs survived on an error, but was trapped by Schreiner's tap at third after Harold Freund had rolled out. Scheiner made second on the play and scored on an error by Bourn, who was filling in at the short field position. Last Friday night the McHenry team romped all over the Genoa Cubs in an exhibition contest, 15 to 10. Fflug hurled the first few inning? and gave jaray to Green with an 11-1 ledch in the fourth. - The McHenry Girls team, playing the preliminaries to the big games, won from Woodstock High girls before the Genoa game and then lost to the Yellow Jackets, an older girls' team from Woodstock, prior to the These games have hMf - - JS 4 Pockety Sports Cottuqae • This two-piece yellow pique dress for active sports Wear has four diagonal pockets and Is fastened - dowr. the front of the blouse with four self ties. Sunday he set them down Adams, lb;, with six hits and the J ohnsburg team stepped away with a 16-4 victory. Four of the first five places in the batting averages of the Johnsburg team are held by Smiths with Walter leading the group. Leo Freund then breaks up the family proposition by .claiming second pface but then Charlie, Huppy and Clarence come along. And that's all the Staviths there are on the team, there isn't r.o more, which makes the coughdrop boys just about the top notch family on the Johnsburg diamond- When it comes to^clasly fielding, you won't see any better than those two stops by Harold Freund in the Genoa Softball game last Friday night. Playing in the rain without spikes didn't help him any but on one he went over behind second and took a fast hopper to throw his man out at. first. Several innings later he went behind the third base position to take another nasty one and got his man. Captain Bohr also made a pair of neat ones that were rather spoiled because no one covered first white he was after the ball. Stilling, li» Al. Krause, rf 5 4 2 '4. 2 0 3 2 C. And what of the latest prank of those pfankish athletes of baseball, the Dean brothers ? There has been a little undercurrent all along on the St. Louis Cards but most o" it was due to the superior attitude of the Dean Brothers who had accounted for 33 of°the team's 63 wins this season and didn't mind telling folks about it. My guessc is that some of the other hurlers will go to work now that the Diz and his prctege are gone. And where are they to go ? Most fans think to the Cubs and wouldn't they sweeten the Cubs if they diJnlt sour the Eest of the hurlers' desire to win. Reports have it that the White Sox are to release all hut ten of the players now on the roster when the end of the season comes along. They have tried that before and it didn't work so why not try and get rid of some of the office force now, especially one that has been hanging around for the past 15 years and doesn't seem to know how to run a winning team. \ - What a wrestling card that wiH be at Round Lake with Strangler Lewis headlining the card. George "Crybaby" Zaharias and Abie Coleman will also be there with Plummer and Jim McMillan, so it ought to be worth 6rs ere*to half a dozen.
