'.•••• SMITH D! ATK;I\S, President. E. B. MARSH, Secretary. . - THE CUBAN REVOLUTION. Two years of desperate conflicts--ruin ous for Spain, which is to-day on the verge of bankruptcy--have not weakened the efforts of the insurgent patriots In the United States, better than anywhere else, one could follow day by day the varying fortunes of this titanic duel; the landing of the two Maceo brothers, sur. vivors of a family of heroes, both of whom were to find, a few months apart, the most glorious of deaths; the advent in the campaign of Maximo Gomez, the veteran of the ten years' insurrection; the death of Marti, fallen in ambuscade bfiore seeing the triumph of his labor; the revolt deepening, spreading from the eastern to the western department, toward Piiif:r del Rio, and threatening Havana; the recall of Martinez Campos powerless to conquer ; his replacement by Gen. Weyler, a wild beast with a human countenance; and finally, the dissolution greater each da^< of the prestige and credit of monarchial Spain. This is the state Of things at present. The entire people of the United States have espous ed the cause of those who are struggling with so much valoa and abnegation to break so odious a.yoke. Will the Federal Government show itself less generous" than the great nation in the name Of which it speaks? Will the American eagle allow the vulture to settle upon its prey ?--AT; Henri Roehefort in the April Forum, v ,v.V'•s; -V.' •: • STATE OF ILLINOIS, MOBLEWKV CoVVTt, -h':; W- , ? i' "fev wm Circuit Court of McBcnr^ Co., May Term, A. A more villainous murderer and depraved monster never lived, and bis remains are not allowed to sully the soil of his Native State. The urn containing his ashes was shipped to Maine. 'In every town," says the Atlanta Journal, "there are broad-shouldered, stalwart men leading idle lives and com plaining that they can get nothing to do. Their ruin dates back from a little federal office, which unsuited them for useful work. They lost their places, and will stand around for the remainder of , their lives, living on their friends and waitiDg for an appointment. I®" It seems that according to the Sen ator Kingsbury our State officials ought to be better paid, so he has introduced a bill to raise the salaries. We have always looked for a strike for more pay or shorter hours among them. Bfit what about that relic of former days,, the Constitution? Don't it read that "the compensation of State and other officers shall not be changed during the term of such officers?" But then such a little thing as the State Constitution ought not to stand in the way of salary raising. ISP" Robt. Ingersoll, the infidel, is the author of the following: "And why should we envy the rich ? The Vander- bilts, the Astors and the Rockyfellers never drank any colder water than have. They never smoked better ciga^ s. They never ate lighter biscuit or better potatoes. We know the ectacies of love as well as they. What is the use of having more than yo'1 can ever spend?" The State University and the Legis- • lature On Friday, March 18, the State Uni versity was visited by the Appropriation Committees of the Senate and house of Representatives and by several other Senators and representatives. The morn ing was occupied by the visitors in in specting the various departments of the University. In the afternoon there was an aseey bly of the faculty and students in the chapel. Speeches were made by Senators Dunlap, Bogardus and Hull, and by Representatives Meniam, Allen, Perry and Marquis. Those members who visited the University for the first time seemed to be particularly impressed by the extent and value of its work. The feeling was very generally ex press ed that in spite of unfortunate condi tions in the treasury, the needs of the University are too important to be neglected, that the honor of the state de mands the building of a State University at least equal in equipment and general efficiency to thbse of Minnesota, Wiscon sin, or Michigan. This maxim has been found applicable to many othei things besides murder. Housewives > know it to be true when there is alum in baking powder. A bitterness in the bread at once betrays the alum's pres- neee. It can't conceal its true nature The alum bitterness ,"will out," and ~ " gcause it will, physicians, who under stand the harmful effect of alum on the system, are at a loss to know why people continue to buy baking powders eon- tainitig it. All baking powdera sold for 25 cents a pound and less contain alum There is surely no economy in using these cheap powders. For a pure cream of tartar powdier, as Dr Price's was shown to he afc the World's Fair, go so muph further and gives so much hotter results, there is no, doubt of its being more economical in the long rua. i | - " ; , / . . v "o 5U 3 . 15 .. 18'.. 4 20 65 5 77 2 .. 11 17 50 .. 125 .. 6 .. 430 1 40 16 75 7 '.. 6 50 5 .. 112 27 H3 05 46 92 43 23 3175 12 .. 4 25 6 ..
