"SO I HEAR" .<$' K- by & • M-*' : EARL WALSHT CAROLINE told herself a dozen times a day that she did not ^ care whether she heard from Stephen or not. What possible difference could it make now, after all these months of silence? And here it was Christmas eve. Not a message! Not a card! Oh, well . . . she turned away from the window. One must not allow one's self the luxury of regret. Fires burned brightly on the hearth. Holly hiing above the man- Caroline Wins Not Alone With I|er Bright Fire and Holly. teL Snow outside, cheer within. That was all she required. She hummed a tune in false gayety. A ring at the door. Stephen? No, just a messenger boy with a box. Caroline's fingers crackled the red cellophane unwrapping it. No card. Just crazy dozens of jig-saw pieces. She walked restlessly about the room. Then she returned to the box. Black and white pieces only. Idly she fitted a few together, leaned closer and frowned. Familiar hand-writing. Stephen's hand-writing! Excitedly she bent above thet puzzle fitting the rest together. Gradually Stephen's clear strong writing stared up at her. "Dear Caroline," it read, "if you have the patience to put this together, I shall know you are still interested in me. I could not tell you what I wanted to, before I left, because I was not sure of circumstances. But now I know. . I can take care of you. Will you marry me, Caroline? A yes would be the most marvelous Christmas present in the world. I love you. "Stephen." She laughed a little. She cried a little. Then she went to the mantel and snatched down a photograph of herself. This she cut up into small jagged pieces. On several she wrote a single word, which, when put together, read: "I have gone all to pieces, missing you." Then on the mouth of her pictured face, she added the single word "Yes." These pieces she quickly wrapped up in the box sent to her, and dispatched it by a messenger, who admitted that a gentleman had given it to him, who was staying, at the Inn in town. In another hour Caroline was not alone with her bright fire and holly. And Christmas eve was what it should be. Stephen declared he had been too scared to come himself and sent the puzzle as a test-case. Then he kissed her. C Wastorn Newspaper Union. Now in minority representation even if they are Republicans. -INdw, take Dreymiller. There's a name that makes news. Anybody that builds a dog house in the basement and has to knock down the wall to get the darn thing out certainly has that we have a fairly good team, the something that makes news. Well try (inquisitors wonder why we are not hard to keep him out of here, but we meeting these schools. just can't promise too much. --I-- • Now take Glenny. Take the whole push of 'em if you will. You'd be surprised at all the requests we get from the ladies to write something about that fellow. This guy Robert Taylor may be some shakes in Hollywood, but McHenry has her own idol. -lilt may come to pass that we can keep Glenny out at that. 'Twould THEME SONG" DRESS We have thought some of writing up Harold (Hi you up there) Lindsay, but he's too long for one column. -n- WMle we are talking of those drug store boys, we feel bound to report that both stores have pulled out last year's gifts and have them on display,] for your Christmas selection. Well, have plenty of room on the schedule to be fair, they really have some new* for these natural rivals, but have been for towns of the Woodstock, Harvard, Crystal Lake clas$, - \ • 7 -j--.- No. It simply cannot be fhat they consider McHenry too strong. There must be another reason. The McHenry public demands to know this reason and direct all queries at The Plaindealer sports department. We would like to know. ~ --fl- Our school officials say that they The deep yoke-shirring of this little "theme song" dress, extending all the way to the waist, is decidedly "tops" in style for the very young miss, this season. Small puffed sleeves complete the quaint picture. And newer than new is the fabric itself, designed to interpret a familiar song, to the delight of young wearers. "Daisy, Daisy, tell me your answer true" is the song from which this particular design drew, inspiration. We call him Jim.) ^ • --IIHere's an OTtburst from Center Street that we are glad to print: _ ---"•II ' „ Friend Earl: We have been watching interestedly, something that is happening practically in our front yard. The "City Fathers" are having the Clay Hole dressed up for skating in the nicest gesture toward the kids (from eight to eighty) that we've seen in many a day. That brings another thought. How about a town hockey team? There gome able skaters in this burg. There is room for a good hockey course, which if laid out properly, still allows the little folks and beginners plenty of room to fall down and still not get trampelled. You know, the Center Street kids have for years, considered the "clay hofc" their own private skating pond, and are looking askance at this new project. However, there is room for everybody, %nd it's the safest place in the county for the kids to enjoy themselves. Now, the only other thing is to try to keep Linus and his men from hauling the wood away that was left from their tree-trimming. Half the fun of skating is the bon-fire on the shore. Comes in handy to thaw out frosty fingers and toes. Some of the skaters should whisper in his ear. Yours, GLENN F. PETERSON. t - - West McHenry, 111.' The score board at the gym said that McHlenry won 70 to 17. The score1 book says that McHenry won 73 to 17. Well, what's Ithe difference in otir young lives? Coach Reed had his first team on the bench most of the game, but the other fellows kept right on with their scoring spree. The score alone will tell you the story. McHenry was hitting. Marengo looked very weak in all departments. Our second team ran wild in their game tpo. This second tea,m has some boys who will be heard from later, They play smooth basketball.
