If present moods are a trust-, worthy indication of what the new calendar year holds in store, then trouble is ahead in the relations be- >; tween the two branches of the Federal government. The special session closed down with nothing more than a large expense account to show for { their six weeks stay. The vexation which the departing solons left in their wake augurs. ill for the lawmakers when they return to their duties at the regular session next week. TEL. MAJESTIC lEleetrie Lights la Capit4l 9 Electric lights were put in tne Capitol in 1879 and in the White House in 1890. ^ R-Y " oughly irked at the defeat of his pet legislative measures at the special session particularly his reversal by the House in recommitting the wage and hour bill. They say that strong hints have been given out that Mr. Roosevet has found that flattery and an occasional pot-shot are of no avail in swaying the rank and file of legislators who stubbornly refuse to accept dictation from the executive branch. The new tactics, rumor hath it, involve hurling a catalogue of Congressional infirmities (White House version) to the waiting world in an effort to win popular support for Roosevelt policies. It is too early in the season to predict whose political hides will be left out to tan on the new fence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. ( There are many hearty chuckles over the manner in which politics makes strange bedfellows. The cards are falling in such a fashion that President Roosevelt will find himself .obliged to play along with the same ciques that wrecked his Supreme Court reform bill last summer. His assurances to the taxpaying public that he wants to balance the budget through economies in public expenditures is right down the alley of the newly formed coalition. The new non-partisan combination, in the Senate at least, has many leaders who scuttled the court tinkering scheme. Their present program of ten points for sound government includes an item for economy. Other items are diametically opposed to present White House ideas for the main objective of the coalition is to bring about a stabilization of government policies to encourage recovery from the current industrial recession. The clash comes over principles wherein the Administration continues with dogmatic f\xity its crusade against private enterprise. With Attorney-General Cummings attempting to ambush the Federal judiciary when court decisions are against the government, the plan of the coalition for better relations is just 9 far-away objective. War alarihs emphasized by the hombing of the U. S. Panay in Chinese waters coupled with concern over the Ludlow war referendum resolution in~ the House of Representatives has diverted attention from domestic issues over the holidays While the social--- ites in political and diplomatic circles eat and drink merrily at swanky gatherings, a note of concern is quickly detected in their- conversations. Curiosity, as to what the President will say about international affairs in his annual message on the state of the union next week, has reached a fever point. The President's hand has been strengthened by the Landon telegram endorsing the view that Congress should not hamstring the responsible head of the government in negotiations with foreign powers. War scares have a tendency to level off political bumps.
