Lust Ttoiday'i Memorial Day services at McCnllom Lake, attended by no leu than 800 residents, were without a doubt the meet impressive nd solemn rites ever held in our community. Our heroic sons of the services whom the good Lord saw fit to retarn to as unharmed after the great struggle gathered at our beach promptly at 1:30. Soon after Scoutmaster Fred J. Svoboda and his Boy Scout troop, No. 102, of the McHenry Council made their appearance, followed by Mrs. Joseph Horn and Harry Lock in their cars bearing the Gold Star parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Bailey and Mr. and Mri. Jake ; ffeiter. v Mrs. George Goranson, Mrs. Jerry Cermak and Mrs. Clarence Feiereisel were busily engaged in lining up the McCullom Lake children's cnoir. . S Soon after the good folks of McCullom Lake began congregating on ' the scene. It took but a few minutes to get this vast congregation Into formation for the seemingly endless parade. Hie extremely talented Patsy Goranson acted as drum majorette. She presented a beautiful picture in her lovely costume, whirling her silver baton. Ed. Brautigan carried the colors , " with Ex-Waves Jerry Doran dhd fc.: Jean "Toots" Schmidt acting as honor guards. Robert Doran followed next with his company khaki II dad heroes. I Navy Lt. Jack Gregory, a seasoned f nwuca ana lour-yeerlinger, followed. After irftad moving no less isd of our folks fell in veteran of two world wars, clad in his regulation whiles, presented a very striking picture, leading his boys in blue. The Gold Star parshts, chauffered by Harry Lock and Mrs. Joe Horn, were next followed by at least twenty flag-bedecked care, all Ailed to capacity.. The route of march was on Orchard Drive to Spring road to Fountain line to Hickory drive, terminating at our honor roll at Greenwood road and Hickory drive. The services began with the presentation and dedication at a huge flag, a gift of the Horn family, in memory oft the late Alex Horn. After these ceremonies Memorial services for McCullom Lake's two heroic sons, Yeoman 1/c James Bailey and Pfc. Jack Feiter, who :have made the supreme sacrifice, 'began. Commander A1 Svoboda of the Hilmar J. Behrants, Jr., Post, No. 612, American Legion, said the opening prayer, after which Georgie Baumbeck, Patsy Husks*. Johnnie Vycital and little Joan Freisinger, escorted Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Bailey and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Fei- , ter, parents of our departed heroes, to their seats. . I Rev. Eugene Baumhofer of St. Mary's church in McHenry, said the invocation prayers, after which the candle-lighting ceremonies took place. Benediction was then bestowed by Rev. Price of the Methodist church in McHenry while the huge mass of people present bowed their heads to prayer. Lt. Jack Gregory lowered the flag to half mast while Charles Frits sounded taps whieh were echoed by one of Scoutmaster Svoboda's Boy Scouts. The ceremonies were concluded when the choir sang "God Bless America."* This was one day when McCullom Lake was really and truly "On'Parade." HOWARD WATTLES Mchenry State Bank, Cleric idents of ifcCullom Lake dreamed of thanks to those who officiated at a bus service to connect them with Memorial Services at the Mcthe outside world. Last Sunday pu"om Lak® J?0"0* 5°n- fomenting at exactly 10:35 this dream tend o«r particular thanks to the became a reality. When that first following: Rev. Eugene Baumhofer, bus, piloted by President Robert Winkel of the W. A. F. Transportation Co., made its appearance on the scerfe, who do you suppose was there on hand to greet him? You guessed it. The Screwy Dozen. The club's official greeter, Ed. Brautigan, presented Mr. Winkel with a huge gold key, which symbolized the sentiment of the people of McCullom- Lake towards the W. A. F. Co. A second bus, driven by Lennie Antonson, with Mr. and Mrs. Nick Freund, Dick Freund, the glamorous Mrs. Winkel and Mrs. Antonson as passengers, pulled up behind Mr. Winkd'a bus and it was then that things really began to get hot. In spite of the early hour - the "Blue Gills" and the "Screwette Darlings'* began giving 6ut on a 440 line. A pink and blue ribbon was stretched across Greenwood road and the first passengers began to file into the bus to the tune of "Happv Days Are Here Again," played by the ' Blue Gills." How "Bob" Winkel managed to squeeze fifty-two passengers into a 27-passenger bus we can't exnlain. It was exactly 10:52 when President Jerry Cermak of the Screwy .Dozen cut the ribbon with a borrowed pair of hedge clipners when the first bus got under way with a capacity pay load. The trip to Ringwood was uneventful but soon after leaving that metropolis Jerry Cermak asked the driver to stop at the next fire plug. From Ringwood to Wonder Lake to Woodstock, Mr. Winkel very,-obligingly fulfilled the many wishes of his passengers. Some asked for more air, some fori less, some asked him to turn on the lights although the sunlight streamed < through the highly polished windows. I A mother with an infant in her arms requested him to stop and help her with a change and it took Mr. Win-1 kel just forty seconds to convince l the lady that the W. A: F. outfit: aims to please and gives their passengers service with a smile. There was never a dull moment on this first trip from McCullom Lake to McCullom Lake. The Blue Gills gave out with the music while the passengers gave out with the vocals. The Screwettes had a difficult time toying to go through their routine with just 144 square inches of floor space beneath them. Somehow the darlings managed it. George Baumbeck, one of our local boys, who was .also a paslenger on the hus, was | very much disapDointed when this carrier failed to go through Crystal Lake. It has been his life's ambition to go there to view the many j three-story skyscrapers that grandpa told him about. The ever-obliging Mr. Winkel turned him over to jan agent of the Travelers Aid Sojciety who also enlightened George on many other things that Grandpa Baumbeck kept from him. Suffice it to say that the passen- 11 * a £rand trip and all of McCullom Lake joins us in wishing the W. A. F. success in their venture. George is a changed man after that first ride. Thanks to the W. A. F. Col. John Belmonte of the Army Medical corps, a veteran with five and a half years of service to his credit four of these long years were spent in service in the southwest Pacific is at present stationed at the Gardiner hospital in Chicago and expects to be discharged in the near future. It will be a happy day for all of McCullom Lake when we can say "Welcome hotne, doctor." Mr. and Mrs. Dave Reid had as weekend guests their favorite nephew and his Tovely bride, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heseltine of Chicago. Some weeks ago we mentioned that the love bug had nipped Everette Ingersol and Gladys Keegan. Now we are happy to 'report that Everette and Gladys said their "I Do's" m before Justice of the Pteace Hayes in Woodstock last Friday. The best of luck to bbth of you nice kids and may all your troubles be little ones. IGNITION * J SEACO;.. SALES AND SERVICE if i|OT0& KZBUILDINa BRASS SE&VICS FRED J.
